  1. decoy homeworlds position after a few turns. each player has a "binary star" as in normal homeworlds, but the two stars are entangled at a distance: treated as functionally two locations, but each one has all the star properties of both.

side effect of this: you cannot warp directly between your two homeworlds, as they have a star in common :)

  2. Decoy Homeworlds (or, "Where's the Emperor?")
    ---
for a while now ive been trying to think of a way to make the tabletop game Homeworlds be a little less deterministic. the most popular variant, Binary Homeworlds, is "chess-like" in the sense that there is no luck, only knowledge of board positions.

and memorizing board positions just isn't very fun to me. I like knowing that even against a skilled player I have the opportunity to do something unexpected.

So, without further ado, here's my proposed house rule:

    - At the start of the game, when you create your homeworld, make a "half-homeworld" with one star and a large ship.
    - Once both players have made their first half-homeworld, they make a second half-homeworld with one star and a
    medium ship.
    - Once both players have made both half-homeworlds, they place a playing card under each one, secretly assigning them "True" and "False" status.

Game proceeds as normal, with each player having one action per turn, except:
    - Each half-homeworld is entitled to use the star color of the other half-homeworld (they are entangled)
    - If a half-homeworld is destroyed, reveal its card. If this was a True homeworld, the game is over. But if a False homeworld is destroyed, return the pieces to the bank as normal and continue playing! The true homeworld is no longer entangled.

I'm really excited to test this, I think the two-half-homeworlds rule could be really fun in its own right, but the ability to bluff someone out late game by saying "do you REALLY want to spend all your resources attacking my decoy?" is very appealing.

  3. Happy (early) birthday to me! I am unboxing the Looney Pyramids gaming system. If you know it, what are your favorite games? Which would you avoid? #LooneyPyramids #PyramidArcade #Homeworlds #AndrewLooney #IceHouse #IceHousePyramids #IceHousePieces #Boardgames #AbstractStrategyGames
