Apparently besides having to pay the same $299 for a wall mounted version of the Apple Homeview, it's even more expensive, because you have to buy a separate wall mount for at least $59 or higher AND it doesn't come with a charger, adding an extra 20-30$ to the total. So you're paying almost $400!

If this the start of the John Ternus era, I am expecting a difficult decade for Apple.

We’ve seen the trailers. We’re in the swirl of they hype storm. What the real story wil be is yet to unfold. Even so, some are declaring success before the first reel even kicks off. 

It’s not hard to see the excitement around the iPhone Duo, Apple’s folding iPhone, and the Homeview gadget meant to be used in your home by you and all of your very loud family members. Even so, Time Magazine’s cover story about The Best Inventions of 2026, featuring new Apple CEO John Ternus feels a bit premature.

I’m not poo-pooing what these new Apple devices may offer. No one knows. And that’s the point. I’ve got questions about both I want to see answered once the devices are in real users’ hands and how that all fits in with Apple’s philosophy about making the iPhone the center of your universe.

I especially have questions about the Homeview after seeing Apple’s video trailer for the device. That’s based on the fact that nothing I’ve seen so far in any OS with a 27 at the tail end of it works as fast as that bit of video makes you want to believe. Much less fast user switching. Siri AI may be improved, but it’s still feels slower than the non-AI version of a year ago. Perhaps an OS update will fix that at some point in the future. But these devices roll out sooner than that.

I’d love to see these new gadgets be winners and live up to the hype and the promises. That may indeed happen. My hesitancy and skepticism is that I’ve yet to see Apple’s software come close to living up to that hype, much less the speed or efficiency I believe everyone wants. In fact, given that much of this is somehow connected via Apple’s flavor of AI, Apple Intelligence, I’ve yet to see any chatbot of any stripe deliver on that kind of promise consistently. And consistency is the key. Or at least should be.

But then again, all the world’s a beta these days.

Feels like an always-on tiny iPad screen (with an even smaller feature set) on a lazy Susan that the entire family can heckle for grandma's French Toast recipe and associated trivia.

Is that the best they could come up with, or did I just miss something profound?

Even the privacy demo seemed contrived. Why would users skip their personal devices and go to the revolving sunflower for private tasks?

Czego nie powiedziano o HomeView?

Apple pokazało HomeView jako centrum inteligentnego domu za 299 dolarów, ale najciekawsze szczegóły wyszły dopiero w dokumentach pomocy. Brak App Store’u, droższy w praktyce model ścienny, wymagania dotyczące zasilacza i koszty napraw to rzeczy, o których warto wiedzieć przed zamówieniem.

Na scenie i w komunikatach prasowych HomeView wygląda dobrze: kwadratowy ekran, Siri AI, kolory, wideorozmowy, widżety. Jak to zwykle bywa, najciekawsze rzeczy znajdują się jednak tam, gdzie mało kto zagląda, czyli w dokumentach wsparcia, stronach napraw i przypisach. Przejrzeliśmy kilka takich miejsc, a wnioski są mniej cukierkowe niż prezentacja.

Brak App Store’u, ale jest „CarPlay w domu”

Jak pisze Jason Snell w Six Colors, HomeView nie ma App Store’u, ale ma swoistą historię aplikacyjną. Na ekranie głównym, który zaskakująco przypomina iPada, jest wybrany zestaw aplikacji Apple (Budziki, Kalendarz, FaceTime, Znajdź, Dom, Intercom, Wiadomości, Muzyka, Podcasty, Przypomnienia, Safari, Ustawienia, Timery, Pogoda i Zegar światowy, a z iPhone’a dochodzą jeszcze Audiobooks, Muzyka klasyczna, News i TV), ale nie da się dodać kolejnych.

Aplikacje innych firm trafiają na HomeView tylko jedną drogą: przez projekcję z iPhone’a, wyłącznie dla programów audio i wideo obsługujących CarPlay. Fani Overcasta czy Spotify mogą więc odetchnąć. Snell zauważa ciekawostkę związaną z wideo w CarPlayu, które Apple dodało w tym roku i które działa, gdy samochód jest zaparkowany. HomeView, jak żartuje, jest zawsze zaparkowany. Poza tym Siri AI może przeszukiwać treści z aplikacji na iPhonie i iPadzie, także tych, których nie ma na HomeView, ale samych aplikacji nie da się uruchomić. W praktyce oznacza to, że jeśli korzystasz z innego kalendarza niż Apple’owy, na HomeView zostaje ci Kalendarz Apple’a albo wersja webowa w Safari. Snell uważa jednak, że to produkt w wersji 1.0 i że Apple prawdopodobnie rozszerzy jego możliwości. To dobra uwaga, ale dziś o aplikacjach trzeciej strony na HomeView trzeba myśleć jak o rozszerzeniu iPhone’a, a nie samodzielnej platformie.

Model ścienny: za 299 dolarów, ale bez wszystkiego

Najciekawsze są szczegóły dotyczące wersji ściennej. Jak opisuje 9to5Mac, oba warianty kosztują 299 dolarów (przedsprzedaż trwa, sprzedaż ruszy 13 listopada), ale HomeView (Wall Mounted) nie ma w zestawie ani uchwytu, ani zasilacza. Standardowy model jest przymocowany do podstawy z mocniejszym głośnikiem. Apple sprzedaje dwa uchwyty, od 59 dolarów, a trzeci ma pojawić się na początku 2027 roku. Prosta arytmetyka: wersja ścienna to co najmniej 358 dolarów, i to bez zasilacza, chyba że wybierzemy uchwyt umożliwiający podłączenie do instalacji elektrycznej.

I właśnie zasilanie jest pułapką. W dokumencie wsparcia, który opisuje 9to5Mac, Apple podaje, że standardowy HomeView potrzebuje zasilacza USB-C o mocy co najmniej 30 W, obsługującego 15 V przy 2 A (a w pudełku jest zasilacz i kabel). Model ścienny wymaga natomiast zasilacza USB-C o mocy co najmniej 20 W z obsługą 9 V przy 2,22 A, kupowanego osobno razem z kablem. Jeśli parametry się nie zgadzają, urządzenie może wyświetlić komunikat „Not Enough Power”. Apple podlinkowało jako zgodny 40-watowy zasilacz Dynamic Power Adapter z maksymalnie 60 W. To nic strasznego, ale w kategorii „kupiłem, podłączyłem, działa” taki szczegół wygląda mniej fortunnie.

Koszty napraw: bliżej ceny nowego urządzenia

Apple opublikowało też szacunkowe koszty serwisu. Według 9to5Mac szacunkowy koszt naprawy poza gwarancją, w kategorii „inne uszkodzenia”, wynosi dla obu modeli 279 dolarów, czyli niewiele mniej niż cena nowego urządzenia. Z AppleCare opłata za przypadkowe uszkodzenie to 39 dolarów, niezależnie od modelu i rodzaju uszkodzenia.

Nie ma na razie rozbicia na konkretne usterki, jak pęknięty ekran czy wadliwy głośnik, co sugeruje, że Apple może wymieniać całe urządzenia, zamiast naprawiać podzespoły. Firma tego jednak nie potwierdziła.

Nie dla UE

Warto dodać dwie rzeczy z wcześniejszych komunikatów. HomeView nie będzie sprzedawany w Unii Europejskiej, bo Siri AI nie jest tam dostępna w iOS, a Apple deklaruje, że szuka rozwiązania. Poza tym Siri AI na starcie działa tylko po angielsku w kilku krajach, a polskiego w planach nie widać. Informacji o polskiej cenie ani dostępności nie ma.

Żadna z tych rzeczy osobno nie przekreśla HomeView. Razem składają się jednak na obraz urządzenia, które w prezentacji wygląda na gotową platformę, a w praktyce jest bardziej rozbudowanym ekranem do Siri, Domu i multimediów, uzależnionym od iPhone’a. To całkiem sensowna propozycja dla osób głęboko osadzonych w ekosystemie, ale kupując, warto policzyć realny koszt (zwłaszcza wersji ściennej), sprawdzić, czy ulubione aplikacje obsługują CarPlay, i pamiętać, że naprawa może być droga. Jak zauważył Snell, to wersja 1.0, więc wiele jeszcze może się zmienić. Dopóki jednak Apple nie zdecyduje, że HomeView ma być własną platformą aplikacyjną, to, o czym milczano, jest równie ważne jak to, co pokazano na scenie.
