Indiana State Fair 2026 Photos, Part 2: The Year in VHS
Previously on Midlife Crisis Crossover: It’s that time again! The Indiana State Fair is an annual celebration of Hoosier pride, farming, food, and 4-H, with amusement park rides, cooking demos, concerts by musicians either nearly or formerly popular, and farm animals competing for cash prizes without their knowledge. My wife Anne and I attend each year as a date-day to seek new forms of creativity and imagination within a local context... ...and once again the most interesting exhibit was hosted in the Harvest Pavilion: "Rewind: A VHS Revival". Same as last year's tribute to LP cover art, the curators started with a simple premise -- in this case, "Remember movies on videotape? Those were awesome!" -- and didn't tailor everything to Indiana specifically, so much as it hearkened toward ye olde American entertainment monoculture. They assembled a collection of simulated video-rental store shelves, videotape boxes, movie posters, painted recreations of posters and iconic images, a few educational sections about filmmaking, and so on. Anyone here interested in dead physical media formats?
Many probably won't remember but in the mid 2000s, there was the last "Format War" we saw in the Home Video Entertainment business - namely HD DVD from Toshiba vs. Blu-ray from Sony. While the latter succeeded, I began to collect several stuff from the first format and last weekend I was unboxing a BRAND NEW and still SEALED HD DVD Player from 2007. 😍

I just finished watching the "Urusei Yatsura" (2022) series (4 seasons).
Pretty sure this will be the end of it, since it ended with the "Kanketsuhen"/"Final Story" plot, which I believe was the end of the manga, and was the plot of the 5th movie.
The series appears to follow the manga more closely than the old series, although I haven't actually read the manga, though I've flipped through it (I have a Japanese copy).
I did like it, although looking over it, I am left with a little bit of "Why would you make this, when there's a perfectly good 196-episode original series, 6 movies, and several OVAs that cover the same material, and include extra stuff as well..?"
The new music is good though. It is HD and widescreen of course, and the animation style is pretty nice. It's quality work. I am even impressed with how well the new voice actors captured the characters.
But it does feel like it's all in the service of recreating a thing that already existed.
Surely, with all the manga out there, there is new stuff -- even new SF/fantasy/horror -- to adapt..? :anime_huh:
But to be fair, I am a sucker for anything UY, so of course I bought all four seasons on Blu-Ray. And maybe that is why. 🤷♂️

RCA expected the VideoDisc to capture half of the home video market, but instead it lost out in a big way to #VHS. But the exquisitely sensitive capacitance sensors used in the VideoDisc players were capable of measuring capacitance differences on the scale of attofarads (1 × 10-18 farad), perfect for the scanning capacitance microscope (#SCM)!
