Waffles, Netflix, and Junk Journaling
This morning, I made the kids scrambled eggs and homemade buttermilk waffles for breakfast.
Which reminds me—I desperately need to make a farmers market trip to stock up on black tea blends and herbal teas.
Homemade buttermilk waffles 🧇 😋I only buy my teas from one woman who locals fondly call “The Tea Lady.”
She makes the best tea blends I have ever tasted, and she only sells them once a week at the farmers market.
So, I’m putting it on my calendar to go to the farmers market the beginning of September!
I started watching the new Netflix series Little House on the Prairie. I was skeptical about if it would be any good, but so far, I like it.
I love historical fiction books, films, and TV shows, especially westerns, so this show is right up my alley.
I’m only four episodes in, but I’m hoping we’ll get a little more character development for some of the side characters as the season continues. There are already a few I’d love to know more about.
Photo credit: NetflixI just realized I have never actually read the Little House on the Prairie book series. Maybe I should add that to my fall reading list.
Finally booked my follow-up doctor’s appointment for my second skin biopsy. My doctor wants to make sure he removed all of the cells of the mole I had on my finger.
My new junk journal I created. I’m going with a farmers market/picnic theme for the main cover and tip-in pages.Lastly, I got to spend a lot of time on creating in my junk journal. I did this in between cooking dinner, doing laundry, and other household tasks. 😄
One of the spreads I created today. 😍Since we are on our break from homeschooling lessons, it’s freed up some time for me to focus on my creative hobbies. 😊
💜 XO

Calm before the storm
We’re supposed to get a storm later tonight. Possible thunderstorms, flash flooding, and tornado.
I hope it just rains and there aren’t any bad storms, but if we do have harsh weather tonight, I hope everyone takes the necessary precautions and stays safe!
We moved our grow bags in a safe spot just in case it storms later tonight. We prepped our basement in case water gets in it. This type of flash flooding is very common for southeast Michigan.
I also worked on moving our garden grow bags to spots outside that will hopefully keep them safe from the storm.
I’ll have to bring our seedlings inside so the storm doesn’t hurt them. 🌿We’ve had unusually cooler temps all week with rain off and on. My poor summer vegetables and some of my transplants are freaking out. 😩
They’re like, “Girl, what is going on?! I can’t stand up straight.” 😏😆
It should be sunny tomorrow, so I’m hoping the soil can dry out and the stressed plants perk up.
My new celery starts have had enough of this rain! The careors and green beans are looking good!I’m feeling much better than I did yesterday. The rest did me good. The kids are getting better each day, too. I think by next Monday everyone will be feeling 100% better.
This viral bug has a slow recovery. We rarely get sick in the summer. 😏 I’m very thankful everyone is healing comfortably at home.and no one had to go to the doctor!
And since we’re feeling a little better, I decided to make a sweet treat for the family — homemade peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. 😋🍪
Of course, my chef assistant Zaya (5) helped. 😄 She LOVES cooking! 😍
I’ll share my homemade peanut butter chocolate chip cookie recipe in another post. The cookies are DELICIOUS! It’s hard to eat just one! 😋🍪
💜 XO
There’s nothing to watch on Netflix
Is a Netflix monthly subscription even worth it anymore?

I've tried baking my own bread after a while, and I love the results.
I've used this recipe: https://www.chainbaker.com/a-very-simple-easy-white-bread-recipe/
And I've also found, that the key is methodology and the process of making it, rather than just the ingredients. I used to underestimate the process part with the breadmaking in past and it shows.

We were able to collect a decent amount of pears for winter (considering we only have 3 trees, and they were supposed to be collected a few weeks ago), as well as more than decent amount of pears suitable for our birds.

As I said last night, homemade beef jerky and crusty Italian bread were on the menu to be made today.
Unfortunately, the best laid plans of mice and men always run awry.
I had a migraine for the majority of today, and the meat that I pulled out for the jerky was pretty thick, and was thawing slowly. Therefore, the most I could do jerky-wise was getting the meat cut and into the marinade.
Then, it was onto the crusty bread. Simple to make, and absolutely delicious. I happened to overwork the dough a little bit, so the loaf came out more dense than I would've preferred-- which you can see in the last photo-- but it is still tasty.
Trust me-- I'm eating it typing this post.

Homemaker ProTip
If you need to thaw something quickly, put it on a cooling rack, even a simple short one for cookies
I wish I learned that much earlier. It's remarkably fast

If you haven't read anything by Meg Conley you've been missing out. Her Homeculture newsletter gives you brilliant writing on women, home, money, work, and more. As one example, this piece on explorers of the rich spoiled submarine type and explorers of the fleeing disaster seeking a new home type. https://homeculture.substack.com/p/the-final-frontier #MegConley #refugees #exploring #explorers #Titanic #HomeCulture #writing #women #work #money #homemaking #Mormons

@anuckols Solar/wind clothes drying? That's our favorite household task. :) We love that task so much even included it among posts on the Bicycling Monterey website; see "The Beauty of Clotheslines." https://bikemonterey.org/educating-neighborhoods-on-the-beauty-of-clotheslines.html

Doing some little household projects today. I bought some nice baskets to hide some necessary-but-not-pretty bits in the living room, framed and hung a pastel picture my 9yo did, reframed some pictures I had over the fireplace (pictures of Houston in the 1920s - two of the original frames fell off the wall and broke a few days ago), and now I'm making placemats out of some pretty fabric my grandmother bought in Mexico. I always enjoy making my home a little nicer.

Plant of the day!
"String of Pearls" is one of my favorites plants but I've never owned one before. Hard to believe how much this beauty has grown from the few cuttings I was kindly gifted a few months ago. 😍 It needs a name! Got any suggestions? -
Home ec and shop classes are disappearing and even the schools that still offer them have limited spaces. Understandably our schools are focusing on college prep, but that means every life skill you don't teach them is a life skill they'll have to outsource or teach themselves!
So teach yourself, teach your friends, and for goodness sake teach your children.
