  1. Calm before the storm

We’re supposed to get a storm later tonight. Possible thunderstorms, flash flooding, and tornado.

I hope it just rains and there aren’t any bad storms, but if we do have harsh weather tonight, I hope everyone takes the necessary precautions and stays safe!

We moved our grow bags in a safe spot just in case it storms later tonight.

We prepped our basement in case water gets in it. This type of flash flooding is very common for southeast Michigan.

I also worked on moving our garden grow bags to spots outside that will hopefully keep them safe from the storm.

I’ll have to bring our seedlings inside so the storm doesn’t hurt them. 🌿

We’ve had unusually cooler temps all week with rain off and on. My poor summer vegetables and some of my transplants are freaking out. 😩

They’re like, “Girl, what is going on?! I can’t stand up straight.” 😏😆

It should be sunny tomorrow, so I’m hoping the soil can dry out and the stressed plants perk up.

My new celery starts have had enough of this rain! The careors and green beans are looking good!

I’m feeling much better than I did yesterday. The rest did me good. The kids are getting better each day, too. I think by next Monday everyone will be feeling 100% better.

This viral bug has a slow recovery. We rarely get sick in the summer. 😏 I’m very thankful everyone is healing comfortably at home.and no one had to go to the doctor!

And since we’re feeling a little better, I decided to make a sweet treat for the family — homemade peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. 😋🍪

Of course, my chef assistant Zaya (5) helped. 😄 She LOVES cooking! 😍

I’ll share my homemade peanut butter chocolate chip cookie recipe in another post. The cookies are DELICIOUS! It’s hard to eat just one! 😋🍪

  3. I've tried baking my own bread after a while, and I love the results.

    I've used this recipe: chainbaker.com/a-very-simple-e

And I've also found, that the key is methodology and the process of making it, rather than just the ingredients. I used to underestimate the process part with the breadmaking in past and it shows.

  7. We were able to collect a decent amount of pears for winter (considering we only have 3 trees, and they were supposed to be collected a few weeks ago), as well as more than decent amount of pears suitable for our birds.

  9. #Naan dough rising, to be cooked tomorrow. Used up the last of my homemade Greek yogurt. These naan are destined for pizza bases when the wife's family visits this weekend. We'll see if any of my in-laws are brave enough to try my #kombucha.

  11. As I said last night, homemade beef jerky and crusty Italian bread were on the menu to be made today.

Unfortunately, the best laid plans of mice and men always run awry.

I had a migraine for the majority of today, and the meat that I pulled out for the jerky was pretty thick, and was thawing slowly. Therefore, the most I could do jerky-wise was getting the meat cut and into the marinade.

Then, it was onto the crusty bread. Simple to make, and absolutely delicious. I happened to overwork the dough a little bit, so the loaf came out more dense than I would've preferred-- which you can see in the last photo-- but it is still tasty.

Trust me-- I'm eating it typing this post.

  13. Homemaker ProTip

If you need to thaw something quickly, put it on a cooling rack, even a simple short one for cookies

  20. Doing some little household projects today. I bought some nice baskets to hide some necessary-but-not-pretty bits in the living room, framed and hung a pastel picture my 9yo did, reframed some pictures I had over the fireplace (pictures of Houston in the 1920s - two of the original frames fell off the wall and broke a few days ago), and now I'm making placemats out of some pretty fabric my grandmother bought in Mexico. I always enjoy making my home a little nicer.

  27. Home ec and shop classes are disappearing and even the schools that still offer them have limited spaces. Understandably our schools are focusing on college prep, but that means every life skill you don't teach them is a life skill they'll have to outsource or teach themselves!

So teach yourself, teach your friends, and for goodness sake teach your children.
