  2. #PortlandME unlikely to change winter shelter threshold amid staffing, funding limits

The winter shelter opens when the daily low temperature drops to 15 degrees or below, or if the city gets more than 10 inches of snow.

PORTLAND, Maine — "The city of Portland likely won’t be changing the criteria to open its winter warming shelter this season.

"Right now, the shelter opens when the daily low temperature drops to 15 degrees or below, or if the city gets more than 10 inches of snow.

City officials met to discuss the threshold and the possibility of making changes to it at a Health & Human Services & Public Safety Committee meeting Tuesday night.

"Despite some recent criticism about the temperature threshold, city leaders who spoke at the meeting said making changes to when the shelter is open this season does not seem feasible.

"This is the first year the city has operated a winter warming shelter. According to Maggie McLoughlin, Portland’s Director of Health & Human Services, it costs about $7,700 a night to operate the shelter. Most of that cost is from staffing.

"With that cost, the shelter has enough funding to be open for 50 nights this winter. It has been open for 12 nights so far.

"McLoughlin said if the city changed the temperature threshold even by just a few degrees, it would make a big difference. If the threshold went up to 20 degrees instead of 15, for example, she said the shelter would be open for an extra 14 to 21 nights, adding an extra $108,000 to $201,000 dollars.

That would take more staff, too—something McLoughlin said is already limited. Last month the shelter was closed for a weekend, despite meeting the temperature threshold, because of a lack of staff."

  3. So far the #nonprofits I've been meeting w/ in my area, & a #Palatka City Commissioner, agree too many are doing the same & getting nothing done in the process. This week I'm meeting with all nonprofits across #PutnamCounty #Florida. We're working on better inter-organization cooperation to better collaborate on programs instead of multiple starting the same project, leading to wasted resources. So resources can be better spent, and bring additional programs and services into the county for those experiencing #homelessness.

Next on my agenda is meeting with #CrescentCity, #PomonaPark, #Welaka, and #Interlachen city councils; continue meeting with Palatka City council; and get on one of the councils with the the CoC, preferably the LEC since I've been #homeless myself.

I started a simple investigation into the closure of the only #homelessshelter in our area, and it morphed into a movement. And the more key players are positioning me to the point of contact between the nonprofits, the CoC, and city and county councils. I'm told it's because I have lived experience and I'm younger than all the other key people involved.

I just pray what we're doing actually works to get another shelter and more services in our county to help these people get back on their feet.

  7. A few months ago the city of Palatka FL closed our only #homeless shelter. I and Spiritual Messiah Ministries had to make noise just to get any kind of answers from the city and the organization that ran the shelter. Why?!? What is this organization trying to hide? I'm meeting with them and other local organizations to discuss options, ideas, and what we can do to get another shelter and programs for the homeless in our county. 9. NOT ACCEPTABLE!!! Get the mayor and city councilors to staff it, then!

#PortlandME #WarmingShelter closed last night, tonight due to staffing issue

Maine's Total Coverage reached out to the city Sunday, but got no answer

    Updated: 8:28 PM EST Dec 28, 2025

PORTLAND, Maine — "A warming shelter in Portland is closed for a second night Sunday after someone from the shelter said staffing shortages caused a closure last night.

"According to the 2025 winter warming plan, the city opens the warming shelter when the low temperature drops below 15 degrees, or there is more than 10 inches of snow accumulation. Last night, low temperatures in Portland dipped into the single digits.

" 'I know a few good people who are out there and they don't have anywhere to go because they lost their housing,' said Julie Geistert, a resident.

"The warming shelter on Riverside Street has a 60-person capacity and is often activated during the winter season. Maine's Total Coverage reached out to the city Sunday, but got no answer. When a call was placed to the shelter, a person told us a 'staffing issue' led to the closure last night. When we stopped by the shelter, we were told it would also be closed Sunday night, but were told to contact the director. We did not hear back.

" 'I think there's just too many people trying to get into those places, there's just such a problem right now, and so much of the problems they're facing are just freezing,' Geistert said."

  10. Albert Barnes, Presbyterian minister, comments on charity from 2 Cor 8. No money ever given to the needy is wasted, as the seed may remain buried long. It will produce in due time.

Do we rush to condemn charitable programs if they don’t produce a tangible benefit right away?

How can you persevere in frustrating charitable projects?

  12. Walking through Glasgow, the many homeless people shocked me. I talked to a lovely lady of the Homeless Shelter about the why and what they are offering. I promised her to put it out on Mastodon. You can make a donation if you can miss some money
