I normally wouldn't still be saving tomato seeds this late in the season. Always save the early ones, to make sure I have a good harvest even in a cool year!

But this year — thanks to that unseasonable early-May heatwave — I have two volunteer plants that weren't started indoors that are doing amazing. Those big beefy tomatoes in front? From a plant that sprouted on its own, in my Edmonton garden, from last year's fallen fruit.

So yeah, I'm saving seeds.

A Summerpick tomato snagged from the vine for fried green tomatoes. We have these a couple of times during the summer - a classic summer dish usually served with remoulade sauce in this household, but sometimes bacon jam. Always a summer treat and forever memorialized in "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe" (1987) by Fannie Flagg. Movie filmed in Juliette, Georgia, 1991.

It's July and the tomatoes are ever-so-slowly ripening here in Georgia. We have had an unusually cool spring and early summer, contrary to the rest of the country. But I think the late-arriving heat has helped the plants out enormously. They're healthier looking than they have been in years, at this time. I see a tomato galette in my future!
