  1. Some feathered birbbrain made a nest in the dryer vent making it not work. Felt bad that there were eggs. At least there weren't any hatched...

  2. Home ownership is always framed as being about building wealth; that viewpoint inevitably leads to higher housing costs and a poorer working class (because treating housing as an investment drives up housing costs).

The true advantage to home ownership is the financial stability it brings. When #renting you are subject to inflationary increases, which means your housing costs do not remain stable, however when you own your home costs remain relatively stable for 25-30 years and then plummet once your mortgage is paid off.

The largest financial challenge of home ownership is putting enough aside each month to cover the maintenance and repair costs associated with ownership; the ones that a #landlord is supposed to cover if you rent, although many landlords shirk that responsibility. The easiest way for a home owner to deal with this is to put a small amount aside each month to cover both the unexpected repairs that crop up and the high cost maintenance
    projects as stuff wears out.

  3. One of the outer walls of our house was never pointed, for unknown reasons. And I'm the type of asshole who impulsively decides to spend half an hour at the YouTube academy before taking a shot at it myself.

This is the type of thing that gives the pros a conniption. But I have the flavour of neurodivergence where I enjoy poorly learning new skills, so deal with it. 😁

  4. I often debate about #DIY or buy with larger projects. Right now I'm debating taking on putting in a new heat pump by myself or hiring it done.

After installing a mini split by mysel, I feel like a heat pump isn't much different. But I would also have to spend a significant amount of time in my dirty / cramped attic space putting together a new ducted air handler.

Will wait for the quote to decide.

  5. Starting to feel like Charlie Brown kicking at the football with this electrical repair. Today? Today? This time? It won't be a rug pull THIS week, right?

  6. While I appreciate the level of documentation and availability of parts that Culligan offers. I'm tired of having to utilize it so often! 🤣

Just gave up and bought a cheap Morten softener. We'll see how long it takes for a breakdown, but if it lasts two years it paid for itself in repair costs.

  7. I really hate when calling my homeowners insurance to get a bank added to the policy turns into shopping for a new homeowners insurance policy.

Dont deal with Progressive's Homesite homeowners insurance. Absolutely no customer service.

  8. Garden dirt and mulch purchased.
    New mailbox installed

  9. Today’s handy thing. Replaced the incredibly old and failing fan/light dimmer with a fan and non-dimmer switch.

Nicole’s office now has full lighting capability again.

  10. Hmm, about the tenth roof undergoing repairs in this neighborhood in the last six months (mostly, new paper and relaid tiles). I guess this is as far as you can take a roof built in SoCal from 1978/1979 without regular service. (I had my roof serviced last year, thankfully) #random #homeownership

  11. Share of households living in owner-occupied dwellings (both outright and with a mortgage) across OECD countries and Greece, 2024

  12. Domestic duties completed.

New blind installed in Nicole’s Office.
    New light/fan switch ordered.

Sidenote. Fuck dimmers. If you need ‘atmosphere’ light a candle.
I’m sure there are legit uses but finding switches that aren’t dimmers is getting harder and harder.

  13. It has warmed up enough in the sun (at 16F) that all the ice that accumulated on the bottom side of my roof is dropping off, making a steady pattering noise in my office.

This is due to moisture getting into the attic (and condensing on the roofing nails). It's vented, which helps, but we haven't had somebody take a look if there is a source of air leakage from the house. My _guess_ would be one of the primary culprits is the attic access, also in my office. Or, the vents might be blocked by cruft (or ice!)

  14. Donald Trump made promises that he would increase affordability for Americans, but in a Cabinet meeting today, he seemed to suggest the opposite. Of current homeowners, he said: "We're not gonna destroy the value of their homes so that somebody who didn't work very hard can buy a home." Here's the full story from @people.

  15. I know I said a couple of days ago I was staying off the "Internet" and I have succeeded, but in my mind #Mastodon is not the Internet, far from it. It is my safe/happy place. So I am still here.

And here is today's #GoodNews from the casa:

Old spark arrestor screen on my wood stove chimney pipe was rotted and clogged. Could not find a suitable replacement, so I bought $6 worth of bulk screen and made my own.

Note the "not FAA approved" safety wire.
