I was thinking through improvement plans for our home and included this year's completions. I then realized I was on my way to creating the first 5-year plan I ever willingly made.
Project Plans:
2026 - Roof, Steel siding for Kitchen, Fill stone stonework, and septic repair - Mostly Complete
2027 - Solar installation
2028 - 8' Stone Wall around property with gatehouse.
2029 - Moat
2030 - Declare fiefdom over villageI have to run it past @GramrgednAngel , but I think I can sell it.

Durham homeowners: pollen creates a chemical barrier that prevents paint adhesion. Proper surface cleaning and preparation is essential for lasting exterior paint jobs. Don't skip this critical step. #Painting #HomeImprovement

First, the sd card on my pihole failed (luckily I had a spare), so I had to fix that to fix my internet, but then I dropped the new sd card when I was trying replace it and it just disappeared, so I had to scavenge another. Fortunately I found one that wasn’t in use, so I got that fixed. Then the part for my dishwasher (that spontaneously broke over the weekend) was delivered, so had to install that “real quick”.. Sometimes you just have a day like Hal…

Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) — Operating Principle
A recuperator (heat recovery unit) transfers heat from exhaust air to incoming fresh air without mixing the two streams.
---
How It Works
Two airflows:
Exhaust air (warm, from indoors)
Supply air (cold, from outside)
They pass through a heat exchanger:
separated by plates or channels
no direct mixing
heat transfers through the material (conduction)
Result: → supply air is preheated
→ exhaust air is cooled
→ overall heat loss is reduced---
Types of Recuperators
1. Plate Heat Exchanger
aluminum or plastic plates
efficiency: ~60–90%
no moving parts
2. Rotary (Wheel) Heat Exchanger
rotating drum
transfers heat and some moisture
efficiency: up to ~85–90%
3. Counterflow Heat Exchanger
air streams move in opposite directions
highest efficiency: up to ~95%
---
What Is Transferred
heat (primary)
sometimes moisture (in enthalpy units)
---
Efficiency Example
outside: 0°C
indoor: +22°C
after recovery: ~16–20°C
---
Advantages
reduced heating energy demand
continuous ventilation without major heat loss
improved indoor air quality
---
Limitations
frost formation in winter (needs bypass or preheater)
filter maintenance required
upfront cost
---
Core Idea
A recuperator doesn’t generate heat — it recovers and reuses it.

Line feed to the house developed an open neutral. One leg jumped to ~150v and the other dropped to ~80v. Wild breaker tripping.
National grid need to come out twice to fully resolve it. Apparently our feed lines had some old and terrible splices. Also some temporary connectors that never got replaced after the meter swap (or have been there forever, not sure). But props for them coming out within 20 minutes of me reporting the issues each time.
I wish I hadn't spent a whole day trying to track it down myself.

For a series of days, I’ve been tackling the back patio. Pressure washed all the moss off, pulled so many weeds from in between the stones, and flossed out the dirt in the gaps with a putty knife. Last night I put down polymeric sand and soaked it in.
Very happy with the results.

This week I finally got around to getting quotes on replacing my flooring...and it came in twice as high as I was expecting! 😱 Now I have to decide whether to do one floor or nothing at all. 😑
