  1. Netanyahu’s Holy Week U-turn puts Jerusalem’s sacred sites back in the spotlight

Dear Cherubs, Jerusalem managed to do what Jerusalem does best: turn a holy day into a geopolitical headache with a side of instant regret. After Israeli police barred Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Palm Sunday, Benjamin Netanyahu reversed course less than 24 hours later and ordered that the Catholic leader be allowed in. Reuters and AP both reported that the initial ban was tied to security concerns amid the war with Iran, but the optics were, frankly, dreadful.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is not just another building with a nice address. It is one of Christianity’s most revered sites, and Palm Sunday is hardly the day to improvise a new policy on access. According to AP, police said the restriction was necessary because of wartime safety risks, including missile threats near Jerusalem’s Old City. But the move still looked like a rare and clumsy slap at a major Christian ceremony, especially because the service involved fewer than 50 people and had reportedly been arranged in line with military guidelines.

SECURITY FIRST, BUT AT WHAT COST?

That is where the whole thing started to wobble. Reuters reported that the ban sparked immediate criticism from international figures, including leaders in Italy, France, and the United States. U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee called the restriction an “unfortunate overreach,” while French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also objected. In other words, the diplomatic tea was spilled before lunch.

Netanyahu’s reversal came quickly. On X, he said he had instructed the relevant authorities to give Pizzaballa “full and immediate access” to the church so he could hold services as he wished. Reuters and Euronews both reported that the decision was effectively walked back after the backlash, with the Latin Patriarchate later saying access had been secured for Holy Week liturgies. That is the part of this story that really tells on itself: first you block the cardinal, then you un-block the cardinal, then you act as though this was all a routine administrative hiccup. Sure.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The episode matters because it landed in one of the most sensitive corners of the world, during one of the most sensitive weeks on the Christian calendar. AP reported that the Church of the Holy Sepulchre had not faced such a restriction in centuries, and the disruption fed broader concerns about how wartime security measures are being handled around Jerusalem’s holy sites. Even if the ban was meant as caution, it looked to many believers like needless humiliation dressed up as procedure.

Pizzaballa, for his part, tried to soften the blow after the reversal, and the Latin Patriarchate moved to keep Holy Week services on track. But the damage was already done: a sacred entrance became a political symbol, and Israel’s leaders ended up explaining themselves to a global audience that was not exactly impressed. The lesson here is not subtle. When a site this sacred is involved, a security memo can turn into an international PR fail in record time.

  5. Big Friday is the time I remind everyone Ecclesia Sancti Sepulchri is my favourite.
Looks small and poor, but the spirit is inside. It goes deep downward into the mountains, contains different altars and staircases.
    So many tongues and sounds.
    Haven’t been there since 2017.
