  2. I love how the Easter Vigil liturgy specifically calls out bees. In the short version, the Easter candle is referred to as "the work of bees and of your servants' hands," while the long version refers to the flames shared from the Easter candle by the congregation's candles as "fed by melting wax, drawn out by mother bees to build a torch so precious."

    "Mother bees," that's adorable.

  3. Holy Saturday, the quietest day of the church year. A day of mournful emptiness, but also hopeful anticipation.

"Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." (Ps 30:5)

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”

  8. Limbus

    Tree trunk, stripped bare.
    Crossbar, damp air.
    Black clouds, crows caw,
    perched on nails — gone.

    A sign, four words.
    No voice is heard.
    Cramped cave, stone bed
    where herbs lay — bled.

    Long wait, dark night.
    No candles burn bright.
    Hinted return.
    But silence — burns.

  11. Vigil

    A candle snuffed,
    its wick is curled.
    A puff of smoke
    in air unfurled.

    There at the tip,
    the faintest spark
    in spirit red
    to spite the dark.

  15. Today is #holysaturday. Unfortunately, the meaning of this day has gotten lost in much of contemporary #christianity.

Today isn’t a remembrance about Jesus passively waiting in the tomb for the resurrection. In fact our Lord was at work on Holy Saturday! As the Apostle’s Creed says: “he descended to hell.” This is known as the harrowing of hell, the day when Jesus descended to hell to proclaim his victory over death and hell, and to liberate the righteous souls who had been waiting there.

The teaching comes directly from Scripture, 1 Peter 3:18-20, which tells us that “Christ also died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit; in which he went and preached to the spirits in prison, who formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water.”

So today is about remembering the full extent of Jesus’ redemptive work. Today we remember that the power of hell has been definitively destroyed! What a precious mystery we remember this day!

  16. On this #HolySaturday, don't forget to always encourage one another and lift one another up in the faith. This is a particular hard time for some, and your prayers are always welcome. 🙏 #encouragement

  17. The “place of unknowing” is how the Rt. Rev. Deon Johnson (Bishop of Missouri) describes #HolySaturday in his #TheDisciplesWay reflection. I’ve never heard it put quite that way, however, I know the feeling very well. The place of unknowing or of uncertainty is the shoreline we walk when things feel the darkest—where earth & sea & sky are indistinguishable— & we feel as if we are alone in the universe. We struggle to get our bearings, to know which way to go. The silence is deafening & we struggle to hear anything else. Sometimes the wind steals our breath & pushes us around while the sea crashes, the sky threatens, & the ground beneath our feet is soft & sinks beneath us. This is a night of loneliness like the one the disciples faced after the crucifixion or Jesus’ felt in the garden of Gethsemane when he asked for this cup to pass from him. Yet, when we wake on Easter morning, he is risen & we look back on this night we see #Footprints in the sand where he carried us to new life.

  19. Just your annual reminder that today is Holy Saturday.

    Easter Saturday is next week.

It probably doesn't matter to you, but it feels important to some of us. 🙂

  20. Holy Saturday, between Good Friday and Easter Sunday, is for reflection and mourning, without Mass, focused on prayer and Jesus in the tomb. The day concludes with the Easter Vigil, starting in darkness and transitioning to light with the Paschal candle, symbolizing hope and resurrection. It invites trust and patience, reminding us that God's work persists in silence. #HolySaturday #EasterVigil #Reflection #Hope #Faith

  22. Watching Easter from Kings, a fitting feast of hymns and readings as we await the resurrection to come…

In the meantime, I’ve completed my first ever attempt at an Easter Simnel Cake, traditionally topped off with 11 marzipan balls, one each for the 11 remaining apostles following the grim tragedy of Judas’ betrayal…

  23. O God, Creator of heaven and earth: Grant that, as the crucified body of your dear Son was laid in the tomb and rested on this holy Sabbath, so we may await with him the coming of the third day, and rise with him to newness of life; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

  25. Holy Saturday, now imagine that the most powerful being in the universe would let himself be #condemned and #killed by #iniquitous people using iniquitous laws. That would be radical, right?

And a blow on the “lords” of this world.
