  3. Not many cities make use of the third dimension quite as effectively as Edinburgh. Our picture shows Arthur's Seat, with the top of Salisbury Crags in the foreground, Both are in Holyrood Park in the heart of the city. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/edi

  4. Bill Gauld's #HolyroodPark, 1975. A map which was used for many years. When surveyed, the park was still grazed. Fewer whins and not many trees. #OldOrienteeringMaps #Edinburgh #Orienteering #Maps #EUOC

  5. Ruined Gothic arches and towering stone columns rise from the remains of Holyrood Abbey in Edinburgh, a historic site steeped in Scottish history. Once a grand medieval monastery, the abbey now stands roofless, with intricate stonework and graceful windows framing views of the surrounding greenery. Visitors wander through the historic ruins, experiencing the quiet majesty of the architecture that has endured for centuries. A favorite spot for travel photography, the abbey is a striking reminder of Scotland’s storied past. #HolyroodAbbey #HistoricRuins #GothicArchitecture #TravelPhotography #ScottishHistory

  6. This is really good news! It's been frustrating that it's been closed so long. (For those wondering about the name, I believe it was built as a punishment for those found guilty of having radical [religious] views!)

"Edinburgh’s Radical Road is set to partially reopen next year, after its closure nearly seven years ago due to rockfall."

  7. I’m sat on Whinny Hill enjoying the solitude, surrounded by sweet smelling gorse flowers, while everyone else flocks to the slightly higher summit of Arthur’s Seat.

I’m reminded of coming up here 5 years ago at the start of lockdown, trying to scramble up to St. Anthony’s Chapel without touching the rocks, as we didn’t know then if the virus was spread by contact. Didn’t have the rumble of traffic or the babble of tourists then.

  8. Absolutely gorgeous evening in #edinburgh, so lucky to have #HolyroodPark right on my doorstep, although the photo doesn’t do justice to the birds singing away nor the coconuty smell of the gorse

  11. Nice view of Arthur's Seat from the wee open terrace in this venue.

Why, yes, we *do* have a large, extinct volcano in a royal park right in the middle of town. You mean your city doesn't??

  12. Out of a salty saltire sky
a leaf out of Leith fluttered by —
    The trembling Scottish heather
    gave sign that the weather
was turning from storms to sun
    and the rain lifted high
to reveal a deep blue sky
and calm for the heather is won

  13. The gaunt ruins of St Anthony's Chapel, overlooking Edinburgh from a rocky outcrop high in Holyrood Park. Its origins are unclear but it may date back to the 1300s or earlier and was probably associated with Kelso Abbey. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/edi

  15. Park Ranger opening the gates around Holyrood Park this evening. Road closed most of Sunday to allow walkers and cyclists to enjoy it more safely.

It would be nice if traffic free all the time, but problem is that would send cars miles out their way, clogging more nearby roads, causing even more jams and air pollution, as this covers (& divides) a large chunk of the city
