  1. By Holocaust survivor Samuel Bak (born 1933), Elegy III, 1997, oil on canvas, 47 1⁄4 × 50 1⁄4 inches (120 × 127 1⁄2 cm), private collection, ©️Samuel Bak. #arthistory #painting #oilpainting #HolocaustRemembrance #holocaustsurvivor

This work hearkens back to the engraving Melencolia I, by Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). I will share the print as a comment.

From the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston: ‘[the] Vilna Ghetto, in Lithuania… in 1941 the artist Samuel Bak, only a child, found himself confined, along with his parents and tens of thousands of other Jews from the city of Vilna, or Vilnius. More than 50,000 perished there. Of his extended family, Bak and his mother survived.

His talent was evident early on. The Yiddish poet Avrom Sutzkever, who fought in the partisan resistance and rescued Jewish cultural artifacts with the Paper Brigade, met young Bak in the ghetto, saw how gifted he was, and helped exhibit his art. But Bak was more than just a prodigy: even under such hostile conditions he had an irrepressible need to create. Besides food and water, he desperately sought paper and pencils. He drew on whatever he could find. Recalling this yearning, Sutzkever once wrote, “this boy harbored something much stronger than those who set out to exterminate our people.”…

The artist has said his work imparts “a sense of the world that was shattered, of a world that was broken, of a world that exists again through an enormous effort to put everything together, when it is absolutely impossible to put it together because broken things can never become whole again. But,” he continued, “we still can make something that looks as if it was whole and live with it.”’

  6. International Holocaust Remembrance Day was yesterday, but here is another reminder: by Hedwig Brahn (1880-1944), “Tatsachenbericht -Terezín Street,” 1944, included in Philipp Manes' diaries, which document life in the Theresienstadt Ghetto. Of the approximately 140,000 Jews sent to Theresienstadt, only about 19,000 survived the Holocaust. About 90% of the children sent there died. #HolocaustRemembrance #arthistory #Holocaust #drawing #genocide

From “Holocaust History: Concentration Camps,” Chapman University, Orange, California: “Theresienstadt ghetto and concentration camp were located in Terezín, Czech Republic, in a former military fortress. Initially, it was established as a ghetto for Czech Jews. Later, it served as a concentration and transit camp for German and Western European Jews. In 1942, SS authorities deported Jews to concentration camps, forced-labor camps, and killing centers. In the camp itself, thousands of people died from disease or starvation.

In 1944 the Nazis temporarily beautified Theresienstadt to deceive an investigating committee from the International Red Cross to make a film that pictured the ghetto as a 'spa town' where elderly German Jews could retire. The barracks were removed, houses were painted, and gardens planted, however, this was an elaborate hoax. The Nazis staged social and cultural events for the visitors. The facts were very different. Of the approximately 140,000 Jews transferred to Theresienstadt, 33,000 died, and 90,000 were deported; only about 19,000 survived. Children were sent to Theresienstadt. About 15,000 children passed through, and 90 percent of these children perished in the killing center.”

  7. PM Carney says Canada was complicit because it "stayed silent" about the Holocaust, but it didn't stay silent. Canada's policy towards Jews wasn't neutrality; it was hostility, then and now.

While Carney talks about new laws and comissions, his antisemitism envoy role remains unfilled after months. It's the veneer of care without any actual substance or urgency at a time when antisemitism in Canada is at an all time high.

And in this framing, he and the Liberals have sadly ceded the moral high ground around antisemitism to the conservatives, who speak plainly and openly about what's going on in Canada right now.

  9. Today, January 27th, is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Across the globe we use today to honor the Jewish victims and millions of other victims of Nazi persecution.

The memory of the Holocaust is not a fixed legacy; it requires constant vigilance against the harm born of the hatred of the other.

Heute ist #Holocaust-Erinnerungstag. Heute?

On 27 January, we want to polish stumbling stones in East Berlin to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day.

We want to listen to some of the stories dedicated to the stumbling stones and work to ensure that they continue to be remembered.

Dass meine Mutter ihren Fuß auf die Rampe setzte
    Du sagst
    Ich weiß von nichts
    Dabei war es erst gestern
Dass meine Mutter den Duschraum betrat
    Du sagst
