SOURCE: SOCIALPSYCHOLOGY.ORGTITLE: Abraham Foxman, Former Anti-Defamation League Head, Dies at 86
Source: Google News - Health
Abraham Foxman, director of the Anti-Defamation League from 1987 until 2015, died Sunday at age 86. "Abe understood the power of words. He often said that the Holocaust did not begin with bricks and mortar and gas chambers, but rather, it began with a word," said his successor, Jonathan Greenblatt, in a statement. Foxman was a survivor of the Holocaust, entrusted to a Catholic nursemaid who baptized and raised him as a Christian to hide his...

History reminds us of the darkest chapters humanity has faced, where fear, ideology, and war led to unimaginable suffering and displacement. This reflection urges us to remember, learn, and ensure such tragedies are never repeated again. 🕊️

Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. So your art history post for today is this Hanukkah Lamp, made in a concentration camp, carved wood, 1942, designed by Arnold Zadikow (1884-1943) and carved by Leopold Hecht (1912-1994), 20 1/2 × 22 × 10 in. (52.1 × 55.9 × 25.4 cm), now in the collection of The Jewish Museum, New York, NY, after many years of use at Congregation Beth Hillel (which has since merged with Mount Sinai Jewish Center). #arthistory #hanukkah #chanukah #holocausthistory
From the website: 'This Hanukkah lamp with the Hebrew inscription "Who is like you, O Lord, among the celestials?" (Exodus 15:11) is a rare example of Jewish ceremonial art created during the Holocaust. The sculptor and architect Arnold Zadikow was deported to the camp-ghetto Theresienstadt in May 1942 and assigned to work in the Lautsch Workshop, which made decorative arts for the Nazis. Zadikow was aided by a young woodcarver interned in the camp, Leopold Hecht, who stole the wood for the lamp from the Germans. The lamp was made for the boys' residence, to enable the children to celebrate Hanukkah and to teach them about Judaism, since Jewish instruction was forbidden. It was hidden all year and taken out only during the holiday. Zadikow died at Theresienstadt, but his daughter Marianne and wife, Hilda, also an artist, survived. The lamp was found in the camp after the war.’

🎭 Wow, Chris Hedges thinks he's cracked the code: the Holocaust isn't just history, it's a tool for villainous world domination! 🤯 Cue the dramatic reading by Juilliard's own Eunice Wong, because nothing says "serious journalism" quite like #audiobook #theatrics. 🎧✨

Tonight is Holocaust Memorial Eve in Israel – /'e-rev yom ha-sho-'ah/ עֶרֶב יוֹם הַשּׁוֹאָה –
And tomorrow we mark /yom ha-sho-'ah/ יוֹם הַשּׁוֹאָה, Holocaust Remembrance Day.
It’s a day that stops an entire country in its tracks.
A siren will sound and life will pause – cars will stop, people will rise to their feet –
And we remember.
We remember not only the six million who were murdered.
But the lives they lived.
The dreams they dreamed.
The songs they sang.
We remember the strength of those who survived and rebuilt – against all odds – lives, families, futures.
In Israel, the memory is not distant history.
It’s personal.
It’s stories passed down around dinner tables.
It’s a middle name given to honor someone lost.
It’s the silence in a grandparent’s eyes when they hear a certain melody.
Today and tomorrow, we honor.
We remember.
And since Oct 7, it is very clear that sadly, never again is now.

My hometown hosted the Jewish refugees the US allowed in during the war. Thanks to homegrown Nazis and Fascists, there were only a few over 1000.My town was mixed Haudenosaunee and white, and was famously on the Underground Railroad to such a degree that the officials were in on it. Almost all old houses in the town still have secret rooms.
None of these conditions should have been necessary, but the truth is that nowhere else wanted to take them.
