Still hoping to hear from anyone on this subject, but so far the impenetrable Iron Curtain has not yielded any #WarsawPact Cold War tabletop #wargaming exercise intelligence….

May comment further in a future #HobbyGamesRecce blog post.

We fear change...but it’s time for me to remove the comment function from the blog. Too much spam drowning out quality engagement, even when moderated. Here’s hoping comments and discussion moves to my social media presence. Which you’ve already found here. Hope to hear from you….

Hot and humid August is back-to-school time here in backwoods Virginia, when we return to academic routines and I assess where I stand with game projects requiring my attention. Some #history and #GamesForLearning development when my other obligations allow.

Younger folks seem to prefer #PhysicalMedia, a trend I understand as a crabby old relic of the last century. The internet gives us access to such wonders, yet can withhold them and inflict a price for them. Our physical media is always at hand when we need its comfort the most.

Summer vacations offer a chance for history buffs to undertake a form of “staff ride,” reading books, watching movies, and even playing games...and then visiting related locations to better appreciate first-hand the places and people of our past.

I’m late in offering ideas for #SummerReading...and game playing. Mostly centered on my own interests, they might cater to some shared topics with dear readers as they navigate the seasonal heat and humidity during brief breaks from work or more substantial vacations.

The passing of John Blanche and Marjane Satrapi caused me to reflect not only on their lives and contributions to tabletop gaming and graphic novels, but to consider how society marginalizes the media in which we find so much joy, diversion, and enlightenment.

Recent inspiration on fog-of-war game mechanics has me considering an #AmericanCivilWar #wargame about troop movements and reconnaissance leading to the Battle of Cedar Mountain in August 1862.

I return to my #WatchReadPlay series with a look at resources to inspire and engage interest in the Battle of Midway, a search-and-engage contest between carrier groups and aircraft that arguably turned the tide of #WW2 in the Pacific theater.

A recent video discussed how the form of media affects the message, through its strengths and limitations, interpretation, and design choices. It reminds us to consider these factors when we play and reflect on how games represent #history.

As an advocate of #GamesForLearning, I value games that inspire us to learn how better to cope with reality. Games help us learn to discern and evaluate facts we consider when we estimate a situation and plan a course of action for the challenges we face on various levels.

My son’s high school lets out on Thursday. We’ve already discussed our summertime activities, including many centered around #GamesForLearning and #history, from day trips and afternoon games to a long-term historical game design project of his own choosing.

Like any media based on #history, games can portray broad events as well as more relatable personal stories. When using #GamesForLearning we can gain a more empathetic perspective of those who lived through that history and rose to the challenges imposed upon them.

In experimenting with different approaches to #TTRPG adventure design I look back in history at the earliest days of #wargames for some inspiration about the idea of scenarios, or the “General idea,” laying the foundations for players to explore the situation on their own.

Good things come in small packages; Battle Box: Napoleonic Wars proves no exception. A compact yet engaging historical wargame, hearkening back to the Kriegsspiel days, with rules and modifications encouraging all the strategy of a big-box game.

Among the many pre-generated #TTRPG characters I’ve used in years running games at conventions, perhaps the best was the dog in my #pulp Heroes of Rura-Tonga. While the setting’s inspired by Tales of the Gold Monkey, the dog definitely plays a larger heroic role many players relish.

And yes, the "someone" mentioned in the post's lead paragraph is @BigJackBrass ... thanks for the inspiration to ramble on about Heroes of Rura-Tonga.

I love seeing bibliographies, sources, and notes on inspiration in adventure gaming materials. They challenge me to investigate further and validate resources I’ve previously explored. They’re a gateway, not a gate, to greater understanding.

Our language constantly adapts to new perspectives and developments in the ever-expanding universe of adventure gaming. How do we categorize #wargames, #boardgames, #TTRPGs, and other forms? We must remain patient defining our terms and understanding others across disciplines.

I wish my high school classes used such engaging #GamesForLearning assignments as Student-Designed Histories developed by @gamingthepast: interactive fiction based on carefully considered research of people from the past and the decisions (and consequences) they faced.

Why do I need so many games about one historical subject? #Wargames and #Boardgames on the same battle can offer different perspectives in how they model historical elements, varying our experiences and, with some reflection, making such games ideal as #GamesForLearning.

I take a look at Morschauser’s #miniature #wargames book from the 1960s. While I initially thought it would offer new material on gridded wargames (and it did), I quite enjoyed its tone and presentation of a concise system for gaming historical battles and an intro to the hobby.
