I’m really beginning to regret getting tangled up with our #HOA board. For one thing, it’s a complete dysfunctional train wreck. Nobody really seems to know what they’re doing. And I now know more than I ever really wanted to. There is some serious maintenance that urgently needs to be done because of water damage over time in the complex, and the funds in the #HOA bank account amount to roughly one-fifth of what these repairs will wind up costing. I don’t know if there has been serious mismanagement over a long period of time or what, but the HOA is seriously underfunded. So, right now, the only option is piecemeal options, like slapping a BandAid on an open sucking wound. Meanwhile, the erosion continues. The only viable option is to raise everyone’s HOA dues to probably more than double what we’re paying now. Not only would that prove untenable for us, but I suspect it will be the same for others in this complex, and if/when that happens that will make this house pretty close to unsellable. Gosh, adulting can be so much fun! So for now we just continue on, with the sword of Damocles hovering over our heads. Sometimes I think there’s such a thing as knowing too much.

@technocounselor Tonight in our #HOA board meeting there were several references to #Claude, as in Claude helped me write this or Claude was able to finish that. Finally someone piped up and asked, “Who’s Claude?” They thought Claude was someone who lived in the complex. Trust me, the meeting needed a good laugh.

With posts going around about the Mastodon HOA, I disagree with some of the points made by some.
Should you join the Mastodon HOA and annoyingly "correct" everyone who doesn't do things the way you want them to do them?
Hell, no!
Will people do things in ways other than how you want them to?
Yes.
Is this a moral failing on their part?
No.
Does this, by itself, constitute an attack on you, or an injury to you?
No.
But what are you supposed to do about it?
Nothing. That's the hardest part for members of the HOA to accept. You don't need to do anything when you see someone do things their own way. Ignore it. Move on with your life. See also: bean soup syndrome.
To clarify and defend against some attacks the HOA has directed against me in the past:
I think alt-text on images is a good thing.
I think people should use alt-text on images they post.
I put good, descriptive alt-text on pretty much every image I post, not just "Photo of <X>".
Do I yell at people who post images without alt-text? No.
Do I boost posts containing images without alt-text? Yes, if they're worth boosting.
Do I yell at people for boosting posts without alt-text? No, of course not. See above.If you're in the HOA, you're part of the problem. Just stop.

HOAs weren’t built for community. They were built for control. When segregation became illegal, exclusion just changed form. Rules replaced signs. Fines replaced force. Lawns, noise, paint, guests, parking all became ways to police who belongs. It’s private governance with no public accountability, protecting property values by regulating people. Same logic as redlining. Just cleaner paperwork.

I'm also up for election as a union representative to a campus senate committee. That election ends Friday. If I end up getting it, I'll bow out of the HOA board election because
1. the incumbents are fine and
2. omg senate committees are a fair bit of work
I did expect to know "by Tuesday the 28th" if the HOA board incumbents were running, but maybe "by Tuesday" doesn't mean what I think it means /s grumble our property management is bad at doing what they say they'll do

Businesses all over the country are learning a day before Christmas Eve that they have until New Year's day to file ownership info to FinCEN, on the threat of severe penalties.
To be clear, there was a stay on the reporting requirements which a Federal appeals code decided to remove today.
#CTA requires most businesses, including small businesses to file information of beneficial owners to #fincen. Fair enough, I guess. But it is written so stupidly broad that it covers fricking #hoa associations. They are a hard bit of money laundering or something, I don't know. It's hard enough to get them to launder gym towels.
