  1. A Monterey County landscaper is grieving the avoidable death of his grandson, 22-yr-old Alejandro Covarrubias, who was killed by a hit-and-run driver while changing a flat tire. gofundme.com/f/honoring-my-bro As reported by KTLA-5, authorities say the suspect could possibly have been driving an #Amazon truck. ktla.com/news/local-news/famil

Alejandro's tragic death is an example of why California Assembly Bill 390 was passed in 2025. AB 390 extends protections that were already given to police officers, highway workers, Caltrans employees and other people doing official work on the highways to ANYONE outside of their vehicle—as reported by Streetsblog California, University of California at Berkeley Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC), and others. SafeTREC found that, in 2022, over 1,200 individuals nationwide were killed due to drivers maneuvering too close or fast near parked cars, including 221 in California.

"Sentence extended but no jail for NT hit-and-run driver Jake Danby who called victims ‘oxygen thieves’. In June 2024, Jake Danby hit two Aboriginal men with his car on a Darwin street, killing one and injuring the other."

The "driver had bragged in text messages that the man he killed was an “oxygen thief” and he would not go to jail. He called it a “two for one combo” and texted it was “pretty funny watching them roll around on the road after going over my bonnet”.

"He was handed a 12-month community corrections order, with five months in home detention." >>
