Durham's medieval Framwellgate Bridge spanning the River Wear and framing the lofty towers of the city's Norman cathedral.
The Grade I listed structure was built just after 1400 to replace an earlier crossing that had been constructed early in the 12th century for Ranulf Flambard, who became Bishop of Durham 1099–1128.
I always find it amazing that something constructed so long ago, was, until in relatively recent times, still bearing the load of through traffic.
Today the historic arches only have to bear their own weight and the throngs of visitors who cross and stop for 'selfies' on their mobile phones while enjoying the views upstream.
At this time of the year, the bridge's golden stonework reflects the colours of the tree-lined riverbanks.

One of the oldest buildings still standing on Sunderland's River Wear waterfront in North East England.
The Roseline Building on Wylam Wharf is a Grade II-listed late 18th-century former bonded warehouse that was converted into office space a few years back as part of the Tombola campus.
The building, which sits on the south bank of the River Wear off Low Street, dates back to the late 18th century.
The wharf itself is even older, first mentioned in 1601, and later 17th century records refer to ballast staiths and tenements in the area.
'Wylam Wharf' acquired its current name name in 1819 when it was sold for £1,990 to Edward Wylam.
Many of the earlier buildings on the wharf and surrounding area were cleared in the mid-19th century with further clearances into the 20th century.
Somehow, the Roseline building survived and now, floodlit at night, it is probably looking at its best ever!
