  1. #OTD 1942 German Sperrbrechers Beijerland & Gauss are sunk with heavy loss of life off Dieppe by RN destroyers. Sperrbrechers (roughly translates as โ€˜Pathmakersโ€™) were designed to sweep influence mines, & even survive hull detonations from contact mines. 2. @AndyLowry According to Wikipedia, fish and chip shops and the ABC tea shop chain all started around the 1860s.

  3. Have been feeling inspired after doing some work assembling communities that I'm really interested in - thought I'd do a tag dump for some of the areas that I'm looking into, as well as have already found super interesting, have been following and am boosting... (not in alphabetical order and probably too broad but for my own future reference also!)

    #Tag heap:

  4. I'm not one myself but I really enjoy reading the posts and increasing my understanding of past things, most often with a unique perspective/spin. And the effort it must involve, shudder. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

But. I have something unique that may be of interest so,

Meet my great-grandparents on mother's side.

You've likely picked up that I'm but I was born in , , England. Went back every summer until 16 for couple of months.

  5. @fedops we haven't got to the other great-grandfather yet. Who I said was likely more interesting. ๐Ÿ˜„

My father retired as a Rear Admiral.
    Buckle Up ๐Ÿ˜„

Incoming litter. And it's actually a mystery to the family. It was found in my grandfather's effects and no-one had seen it before. My grandmother had died previously. My mother didn't have a clue where it came from or the significance.

I'll put down what I know and I'd love to let people run with it to learn more.

  6. I'm just confirming what details I can for the next one. Which I thought was going to be the actually *interesting* one.

It's just myself and my brother with any recollection of this now.

I've *seriously* looked for a place to put this a number of times. I'm glad are interested and I have found the place finally.

  7. My great-grandfather was a very successful tailor in . The business passed his sons and eventually shut the doors in the late '70s(?).

If you were in or at that time, you definitely knew 'Big or Tall, We Fit them All'. My great-grandfather found a niche market in those that bought suits rarely, likely for an 'event' and they were likely rural. So bigger people.

This is his certificate to practice as a Tailor. As well as two ads below.
