  2. Today is #HiroshimaDay, marking 80 years since the devastating atomic bombing. My song Paper Cranes documents an emotional visit to the peace museum and an encounter with a survivor. Today and every Aug 6, I’ll donate any profits to a Hibakusha charity. sitenonsite.bandcamp.com/album

  3. In the Enola Gay
    five minutes before impact
    he whistles a dry tune

    Later he will say
    that the whole blooming sky
went up like an apricot ice…

    —Alison Fell, “August 6, 1945”
published in The New British Poetry, 1968–88 (Paladin, 1988)

Hiroshima was hit by an atomic bomb on this day, 6 August, 1945

  5. Grandson of Robert Oppenheimer:
Israel is an incredibly dangerous country, with its undeclared nuclear weapons. Already it attacks neighbours, murders opponents and their families, rejects non-proliferation.
    (BBC radio this morning).

  6. Hiroshima's (広島) 'Genbaku-no-ko-no-zō' (原爆の子の像 "Children's Peace Monument") was erected on Children's Day 1958 to comfort the soul of Sadako Sasaki (佐々木禎子 1943-55) and the children who died of atomic bomb related diseases.

  7. "Japan learned from the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that the tragedy wrought by nuclear weapons must never be repeated and that humanity and nuclear weapons cannot coexist."

    -Daisaku Ikeda (池田大作 1928-2023).

This was a harrowing watch. A reminder of the unimaginable impact of nuclear weapons, and the crime of attacking civilian populations. And the sheer bravery of those populations.

  9. Credit where it's due:
To #BBC4 for showing "The War Game", made but suppressed in 1965, on impact of a #nuclear war on SE England. Very powerful.
Apt for #HiroshimaDay in this time of know-nothing #warmongers like the wretches Starmer, Healey, von der Leyen, Rutte.

  10. 79 years ago today a nuclear bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, killing 135,000 people, mostly civilians.

3 days later Nagasaki was bombed, killing a further 80,000.

We must do everything we can to prevent an atrocity like this from happening again.

  12. Everyone inside the Promotion Hall, which was almost at the epicenter of the blast, was killed instantly.

Following the city's destruction the hall was scheduled for demolition, but in 1966 it was decided that the renamed 'Atomic Bomb Dome' (原爆ドーム) would become a memorial.

  13. all alone
    in silence at the dome,
    Hiroshima Day
    黙然とひとりドームにヒロシマ忌
    -Shigemoto Yasuhiko (重本泰彦).

Perhaps the most iconic anti-nuclear symbol of our times, the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall was built in 1915 and was immortalized on August 6th 1945.

Hiroshima loves peace. Hiroshima peace memorial park.

Today is #HiroshimaDay and it’s been 79 years since the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons entered into force on January 22nd 2021. Still, only five European countries have joined since September 20th 2017 and this is disgraceful. Thank you to Austria, The Holy See, Malta, Ireland and San Marino for leading the way.

  15. The Atomic Bomb Dome and Peace Flame -which will burn until nuclear disarmament- as seen through the Memorial Cenotaph (慰霊碑).

    The epitaph reads:

  23. Today August 9, marks the 78th anniversary of the deadly bombing of Nagasaki. The US govt bombed Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, the first time atom bombs were used as a weapon of war.

  24. Both the United States and Japan appear to have failed to learn their lesson. Today is #HiroshimaDay and false narratives about the past still persist, sadly.
