Since September 1st 2025 (1 year ago)

I've applied to over 230 graphic design jobs.

This lead to 2 in-person interviews and 2 phone interviews with 0 resulting in a job.

It never used to be this hard, even at my lowest point in employment as a junior and little experience. Now I'm 20yrs into the design world and it's next to impossible.

A self-medicating spelunking guide once taught me the difference between stalactites and stalagmites.

He said stalactites were the ones hanging from the ceiling, and if they weren’t on “tite”, they could fall on you.

And stalagmites were the ones coming up from the ground, and if you weren’t careful, you “mite” trip over them.

He then walked off the edge of a deep pit and plunged 200 feet to his death.

Much like caving, crafting a cover letter that can pass both AI screening and human beings requires care, strategy and a bit of luck.

Our PHD co-founder wanted AI in our research platform. I said it was the next whizbang buzzword that should be used sparingly only where it adds real value as it’s not intelligent nor alive, just using someone’s expensive algorithms, with bonus guessing!

So I wrote AutoMeta (local browser indexdb) saving months on the paper winnowing process with no AI.

(Then balked at shady vulture funding so we’re “self-funded”/on-hold.)

How People Ditched the Search for Exploitative Jobs & Empowered Themselves:
( Future History from a Liberated Utopia )

Too many people were unemployed, anxious in their long job searches, ghosted by employers, sitting around spinning their wheels ( hopefully learning new skills to stay up to date ).

Exploitative corporations and their hierarchical mindset never suited the contemporary generations anyway. So people chose to connect with their peers, and formed egalitarian, democratic, radically transparent, employee-owned co-operatives. Equal share, equal pay, equal say, and the pride of ownership, rather than the drudgery of wage-slavery!

People pooled their time, energy, skills, money, and any other resources they could, to become owners of their own businesses, running them with pride.

In all walks of business – pizzerias, ride-sharing services, delivery services, home repair services, remote-first software companies, and pet-sitting services, people finally decided to keep their earnings rather than hand over the lion's share to some corporation.

People enjoyed all the personal freedom, creative leeway, collegial work environment and informal, no-nonsense directness that came with the pride of ownership. In many cases, family units started their own co-operatives with all adult members owning equal shares.

i've been unemployed for over a month now, and i figure it's about time to start looking for something new.

i'm looking for a remote programming job (anywhere in the stack), ideally around Australia but I can flex a bit possibly. i'm proficient in TypeScript/the JavaScript ecosystem, Elixir, and a few others + i can pick up new stuff fairly easy. also familiar with using LLMs in various ways.

previous experience includes 4 years at a geospatial tech company, various contracting work, and a bunch of open source stuff!

I’m still applying to jobs even though my current job is honestly like pretty nice in terms of accessibility and understanding my skills and limits. It’s just that I need to move out of my friend’s house and the job just barely meets the 3x minimum income requirement for the inflated rent prices in Pensacola.

Lemme sketch ya something:

- Applied for a job in Feb
- Interviewed for job in Feb, essentially a week after applying
- Second interview a week after. Verbal agreement to send Statement of work and other such fun paperworky things within 3 days.

What follows is three MONTHS of unanswered emails, promises that "the boss is really busy but DOES really want to work with me" from the only employee I can reach on Slack.
Boss has a Calendly. Figured I'd book some time on their calendly as that is where one keeps their availability current, except they email me minutes before the starting time telling me they need to reschedule because their Calendly autoaccepts. of course, no rescheduling time is provided. I asked for one over email. Out of the 8 emails I have sent over the last 3 months, one got answered, and only after I had the coworker ping boss. Twice.

Why am I doing all this, in spite of all the red flags that I am very much aware of?
