  1. Hey fellow devs, If you would organize a company wide communication (chat solution), that allows employees to not provide a private phone number (e.g. whatsapp, signal) and log off for quite hours and allow for groups and web hooks. (Also with sending thus storing sensitive data/documents in mind.)

Would you go for external services (#slack, #hipchat, #threema…) or self-hosted solutions (synology chat, #mattermost, #matrix).

My gut feeling is that matrix and mattermost check most my boxes.

  2. I'm in a unique situation at work and am looking for suggestions. We have employees at a location that need a messenger application to communicate but it needs to be free and none of our corporate offerings will work because they are not given user accounts. Essentially they are signing onto a generic PC with a generic account, but need to be able to communicate with each other -_-

They used to use Hipchat, but this is depreciated. I suggested Discord, but this wasn't a favorite. Any messenger apps that could be recommended for this scenario? It's not ideal at all.

In this episode @jerod is once again inviting people to join #Slack.

While I get that it's meant to be part of a community, I have reservations against Slack in particular.

    Namely because self-hosting isn't possible.
Remember #HipChat? That was Atlassian's chat solution before they acquired Slack.

Given the financial state of the company who's promising me that Slack will be around forever?
Or not sold off to another company I don't like?

    Self-hosting allows for migration.

  12. Slack and Atlassian deepen their partnership with deeper integrations - A lot of “partnerships” between tech companies don’t get very far beyond a press release and maybe s... - feedproxy.google.com/~r/Techcr #stewartbutterfield #operatingsystems #enterprise #developer #atlassian #computing #software #hipchat #cloud #slack #jira
