Poonam Dhillon Recalls Funny Incident with Rishi Kapoor

The utterly sickening #KDrama scandal that's blowing up put me in mind of a long-time favourite song from #Pyaasa. This song was banned from radio play for decades in India for its scathing indictment of exactly the sort of moral hypocrisy the tragic and ugly current #KEnt scandal highlights. Unfortunately, uploaders of #HindiCinema songs seem to think "English" means "Roman script", so I couldn't find actual English subs

A fun 5 weeks posting a song a day from Indian films. It's reinforced much better Masto is for me than bsky, more words letting me enjoy the nostalgia more.
The playlist is a reminder that the subcontinent really IS the land of my fathers , and it's renewed my desire to learn to read the language my father learned at school and which left an indelible imprint on his almost illegibly cursive English. "Jiski zubaan urdu ki tarah"

My Dad grew up in Punjab ("5 rivers"),tried to teach me them as a kid & could name them all 70 years later. ALL my bosses are Punjabi, and when we moved into our current home 6 years ago 70% of the block was Punjabi (~50% now).Which makes this very Punjabi song both apt and ironic. Apt because Sadi Gali "our street" IS Punjabi, ironic because I have almost no Punjabi #Bollywood #HindiCinema #Punjabi

Having digital backups of DVDs is super convenient, but in their heyday, those physical media often came in spectacular packaging. #HindiCinema #Lagaan #UmraoJaan #movies

Filmi qawwalis 'come from' Sufi religious qawwalis, like this one. Devout AND catchy, from my favourite Salman Khan film. This film shot in India about cross-border antics reminds me of my UP-born Dad who grew up near where this song is set in (now) Pakistan. Also, my non-Hindiphone wife groks the clear audible distinction between ख and ख़ (nukta) in the singer's voice, warming my urduphile heart #Hindi #Urdu #India #Pakistan #HindiCinema

Great chemistry was NOT a highlight of Mausam, a film in which Shahid starred with Sonam Kapoor, a very distant cousin of his ex, Kareena. The film was imo dire and about 600 hours too long, but this catchy number from near the start shows a bit more of Shahid's dancing skills. #HindiCinema #Music #Dance

Unlike Kareena, Shahid Kapoor IS renowned for his dancing, but what I love about the film is the astonishing chemistry on display between two actors who broke up IRL during filming (or just before, depending on which gossip you buy). This song is a great example of that. #HindiCinema #JabWeMet #romcom #Music

Raj Kapoor's granddaughter (Ranbir's cousin) Kareena starred in my FAVOURITE #HindiCinema #romcom, Jab We Met with Shahid Kapoor, no relation.
Kareena is NOT famous for her dancing, but I love the energy and fun of her performance in this number.

One of Raj Kapoor's truly iconic roles from his Chaplinesque persona, this catchy upbeat song is my favourite from Shree 420, another of my earliest #HindiCinema DVD purchases

Rishi Kapoor's son Ranbir was the lead in Bachna Ae Haseeno, a film named after a song from a film his Dad was the star of. But in this song, I only had eyes for the droolworthy gorgeous Kunal Kapoor (no relation) in the red turban. #HindiCinema #Bollywood

Released 5 years after Devdas, this title track from Aaja Nachle ("let's dance") has long been a favourite for showcasing Madhuri's sheer joy in dancing #HindiCinema #Dance

From another movie I REALLY didn't like, the umpteenth film version of the Bengali story Devdas, about a tragically unlikeable drunk, this stunning dance number features two actors famous for their dancing, Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai (as she was then) #HindiCinema #Dance

In addition to her fame as an actor, Waheeda was also a very good dancer. This piece from one of her most famous movies is a good example of her skill, from a movie I did not enjoy #HindiCinema https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vH3qFuvXzmo -
Sonam Kapoor is not widely esteemed for her acting skills, but for me, while I'm not qualified to judge her skill, her commitment to her craft was never better epitomised than in this #song. Not many actors would be happy to dance with a pigeon on their head. Shabbash!

Looking for something upbeat and cheery to keep me alert during a slow night shift, I went back to an old favourite. Badruddin Jamaluddin Kazi was the only Johnny Walker I've ever been able to stomach, and this song is a great example of why. Even if the film it comes from descended later into a misogynist nightmare, being the first Hindi film I ever watched that explicitly promoted violence against women. Avoid the film, enjoy the song

I still #AmReading Madhulika Liddle's "An Unholy Drought" and this comment from one of the characters shows the writer having fun with history.
"Perhaps, a hundred years from now, no one will even remember the name of Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar"
Not one hundred years later, but nearly FIVE hundred years later, Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar is of course, well remembered. As in this catchy panegyric from Jodhaa Akbar

Currently #AmReading "An Unholy Drought" book 2 of Madhilika Liddle's "Delhi Quartet" so of course I thought of this song. I had TOTALLY forgotten that Waheedaji was in this film!
