Heavy Equipment Repairs Caribou Creek on the #HimalayaRoadFire”
BY ALASKA FIRE PIOS on AUGUST 5, 2025
“…Operations: Excavators will continue repairing the dozer lines that were created. There has been a lot of progress in the Caribou Creek area, and this work will continue. The excavators are still working the 35-40 miles of dozer line and heading towards Glacier Creek near the Elliot Highway as weather allows.
“Suppression repair for firelines takes on unique challenges due to the state’s specific environment. The process is a vital post-wildfire activity that focuses on restoring the landscape and mitigating the damage caused by firefighting efforts. A major concern is the impact of heavy equipment on permafrost, which can be easily disturbed. Therefore, in these areas, repairs are often postponed until the ground freezes in winter to prevent further damage and erosion, leading to the repairs having an extended timeline. The areas that do not have permafrost are the priority to complete before the ground freezes…”

Olnes Pond Campground Reopens as Repair Work Continues on the #HimalayaRoadFire and #AggieCreekFire
BY ALASKA FIRE PIOS on AUGUST 4, 2025
“…Highlights: Alaska State Parks has reopened the Olnes Pond Campground to the public after being temporarily closed. The closure was necessary to accommodate firefighting crews who were using the location as a camp while working on the Himalaya Road and Aggie Creek fires. With fire activity in both areas now moderated, the crews have been able to shift their focus from active firefighting to suppression repair, and the campground is now available for public use again.
Operations: Work continues on the extensive fire suppression repair for the Himalaya Road Fire, with a focus on the Caribou Creek area. Multiple excavators are methodically restoring dozer lines, a process that is expected to take a considerable amount of time due to the significant amount of ground to cover. On the Aggie Creek Fire, the fire is currently in patrol status, with crews scouting for areas that may need repair…”

The repair work will be focused on the Caribou Creek area, with multiple excavators methodically restoring dozer lines. Given the significant amount of ground to cover, this process will take a considerable amount of time. Alaska Division of Forestry wildfire roundup 2025BY ALASKA DIVISION OF FORESTRY & FIRE PROTECTION on JULY 18, 2025
Heat remains within the perimeters of many Alaska fires, smoldering in the duff and organic materials. Here, a firefighter is “dry mopping,” or digging out the burning material, breaking it apart, and mixing it with mineral soil to smother the fire and prevent re-ignition. July 17, DOF.
🔥 Priority Wildfire Roundup, Alaska DOF July 18, 2025 🔥
Fire conditions continue to improve across existing fires on Division of Forestry and Fire Protection’s response area. Much of the firefighters’ focus across these fires is on mopping up, securing fireline, and backhauling equipment and supplies while remaining vigilant for new fire starts.

Alaska Division of Forestry wildfire roundup 2025BY ALASKA DIVISION OF FORESTRY & FIRE PROTECTION on JULY 15, 2025
🔥 Priority Wildfire Roundup, Alaska DOF July 15, 2025 🔥
Restoring uninterrupted traffic flow on the Parks Highway has been a top priority for the Division of Forestry and Fire Protection. A surge force of an additional 100 firefighters sent to the Nenana Ridge Complex are focused on removing hazards along the highway to alleviate traffic delays due to the fire. However, a planned construction project by the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities may result in construction-related delays even though the firefighting efforts are nearing completion along the highway.
Cooler temperatures and rain in areas across the state resulted in few new fire starts on Monday; however, some previous lighting starts continue to show.

Alaska Division of Forestry wildfire roundup 2025BY ALASKA DIVISION OF FORESTRY & FIRE PROTECTION on JULY 13, 2025
🔥 Priority Wildfire Roundup, Alaska DOF July 13, 2025 🔥
Alaska remains at a Preparedness Level (PL) 4. Initial attack was light on Saturday. There are more than 1,900 personnel assigned to 17 staffed fires across the state. Over 750,000 acres have burned in Alaska this year – with more than 300,000 of those acres burned in the last week. High temperatures are expected to peak on Sunday before turning cooler.
Until weather conditions become cooler and wetter, fuels will be available and ready to burn and increased fire activity is expected to continue today. With increased fire activity, additional smoke production will decrease air quality.
