Heavy Equipment Repairs Caribou Creek on the #HimalayaRoadFire”

“…Operations: Excavators will continue repairing the dozer lines that were created. There has been a lot of progress in the Caribou Creek area, and this work will continue. The excavators are still working the 35-40 miles of dozer line and heading towards Glacier Creek near the Elliot Highway as weather allows.

“Suppression repair for firelines takes on unique challenges due to the state’s specific environment. The process is a vital post-wildfire activity that focuses on restoring the landscape and mitigating the damage caused by firefighting efforts. A major concern is the impact of heavy equipment on permafrost, which can be easily disturbed. Therefore, in these areas, repairs are often postponed until the ground freezes in winter to prevent further damage and erosion, leading to the repairs having an extended timeline. The areas that do not have permafrost are the priority to complete before the ground freezes…”

🔥 Priority Wildfire Roundup, Alaska DOF July 13, 2025 🔥

Alaska remains at a Preparedness Level (PL) 4. Initial attack was light on Saturday. There are more than 1,900 personnel assigned to 17 staffed fires across the state. Over 750,000 acres have burned in Alaska this year – with more than 300,000 of those acres burned in the last week. High temperatures are expected to peak on Sunday before turning cooler.

Until weather conditions become cooler and wetter, fuels will be available and ready to burn and increased fire activity is expected to continue today. With increased fire activity, additional smoke production will decrease air quality.

Initial attack across Alaska remains light, but warmer, drier weather has caused an increase of fire activity on some fires. Some fires show no increase in containment due to a focus of effort on point protect and resource allocation to higher priority strategies, such as reducing impacts to roadways and restoration of damaged infrastructure. Many fires have received some precipitation, which has helped to slow fire growth.

Alaska remains at a Preparedness Level 5 and the nation’s highest priority. Initial attack was light on Thursday. More than 1,800 personnel are supporting 18 staffed fires. Crews from across the nation are supporting Alaskan firefighters including four crews mobilized from the Northwest Fire Fighting Compact and six crews mobilized from state-to-state agreements. Nearly 680,000 acres have burned in Alaska this year. Some fires show little to no increase in containment percentages due to the focus of effort on point protection for communities and infrastructure.

There are about 1,800 personnel assigned to 27 staffed fires. Nearly 590,000 acres have burned this year – an increase of about 70,000 acres since yesterday.
