This new documentary on Hilma af Klint on ARTE is well worth your time (if you manage French or German).
It captures the Swedish artist's visionary position between art, science, and spirituality, featuring insights from experts and relatives alongside early archival footage, and many of her abstract paintings: luminous, diagrammatic, and ahead of her time.
I was very lucky to have seen her work in New York in 2019.

"The Ten Largest, Group IV No. 2, Childhood," Hilma af Klint, 1907.
Here's our old friend Hilma af Klint (1862-1944), doing what she does best...giving us beautiful if enigmatic Abstract art.
She painted her own intense spiritual and occult visions, and didn't leave behind much interpretive material, so we're left only to guess at what she was getting at. The title refers to childhood, and the flower images perhaps echo a child's fascination with nature.
I'm amused by the two flower images formed of teardrop shapes, something that became a hugely popular design in the 1960s, here over a half-century ahead of its time!
Klint left her art to a nephew when she died, with instructions to not open them or look at them for 20 years. He had no clue what to expect when he looked at her work, which by then was fully in the Abstract tradition. Now she is regarded as the first true Abstract painter.

"No. 57.26 February," Anna Cassel, 1915.
It's not a shock to find out that Cassel (1860-1937) was a close friend and associate of Hilma af Klint, now regarded as the first real abstract artist. Af Klint founded "De Fem," (meaning "The Five,") a spiritualist group that practiced "automatic writing/art", that is, allowing one's hand to be guided by purportedly spiritual/supernatural forces.
Cassel, whose work before De Fem had mostly been unremarkable landscapes, participated in many seances that involved creation of works like this. In fact, notebooks were passed around to the various members of the circle to do their drawings in...this has led to some confusion about who did what work. A forthcoming book about Cassel insists that she did some work that is currently attributed to af Klint.
So, was Cassel really the first Abstract artist? Impossible to say, but I'm glad to find out about her.
It's an enigmatic work, to put it mildly. I've been unable to identify the gold symbols; the one of the left might be the symbol for Aries, but I can't place anything like the one on the right. Ideas?

"Group IX/SUW, The Swan, No. 6," Hilma af Klint, 1915.
I've written about Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) before, so I'll just say that her work was a reflection of her own unique, eccentric spiritual beliefs, but that now she's regarded as the first Abstract artist, beating all those other male artists to the punch.
This is an intriguing painting...the positioning of the swans and their background is reminiscent of the well-known ying/yang symbol, but I'm also curious about the blood on their wings and the pink burst behind them. Oh well, as with anything by her, it's fascinating and enigmatic.

The next bar has a non-alcoholic cocktail named Hilma af Klint! (Love the abstractness and avantgardism of her art, hate the esoteric supernatural shit.) I went for the alcohol-containing Abduction one, though. #HilmaAfKlint

"The Dove No. 4," Hilma af Klint, 1915.
Hilma af Klint was a Swedish mystic who painted to illustrate her visions and spiritual ideas...but today she's regarded as the first real abstract artist.
I've posted her work before. Often it's very geometric, as we have here, but we have the elements of the dove and the hand reaching to it. It's a very Christian image which is interesting as af Klint was a Theosophist.
