Good morning. We have been for our walk already. The moon is going to have a hard time eclipsing tonight as my phone camera has revealed a secret and as yet undiscovered second sun.
(Edit to add explanation, it was clear enough in my head, but I can see it's ambiguous... the real sun is partially behind the clouds and illuminating them from behind, but below it on the horizon a bit of lens flare makes it look like the sun is rising there, but it's not. It has already risen gloriously.)

Bogdalsberget hillfort in Saltvik on Åland is a much more convincing piece of 1st Millennium fortification. This is what its drystone rampart looks like after 1500 years of no upkeep. Still more than one Chinawoman high. ❤️

The hillfort we regularly walk at is 'under new management'.
This year the usual grazing access doesn't seem to have been granted to the farmer that used to have sheep up here for a few weeks by now, so the bluebells are far more numerous, and the grass is getting longer than it did before.
Perhaps, like my own wild areas of garden, there will be interesting new arrivals now they've been given the time to develop instead of being nibbled.

Scientists Have Uncovered Evidence Of #Ireland's Largest #Prehistoric #Hillfort Settlement

“In a recent study [(link above), the authors] identified more than 600 suspected house platforms in the Brusselstown Ring hillfort [Ireland], making it the largest nucleated settlement ever discovered in the entirety of prehistoric Britain and Ireland thus far. Subsequent test excavations revealed evidence of Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age occupation as well as a potential water cistern, which may be the very first of its kind in an Irish hillfort…”

Here is my latest video. Created with many thanks to Cathy McIver, the project manager at Stroanfreggan Dig. Also thanks to AOC Archaeology Group, who Cathy works for, and Carsphairn Heritage Initiative.
Thanks to Jo at the CatStrand too for putting me in touch with Cathy.
The dig was funded by Historic Environment Scotland and Carsphairn Renewable Energy Fund.#SCOTLAND #galloway

Dumpdon Great Camp: An Iron Age hillfort located on a detached hill at the southern end of a steep-sided ridge of Upper Greensand between the River Otter and the Luppitt Brook. The flat topped and triangular shaped #hillfort of 2.6 hectares was defended by two substantial ramparts and ditches on the northern side, controlling the only easy line of approach, and by single ramparts on the east and west sides. 📷 Bladup #HillfortsWednesday #Devon #archaeology #IronAge More:

Checked that the wonky hawthorn tree was still standing on our walk at the hillfort earlier.

Bjomdalskollen: This #hillfort was constructed on a remote plateau in Telemark, #Norway. It has an inner 30m stone wall along a cliff with large stones at a possible gate, and a fragmented outer wall 80m to the SW. Other features include a bog, a stone structure for projectiles and a ravine with a cairn. It is reachable by a steep ravine path or 2km unmarked hike from the NE and offers superb views and ambience amid nearby barrow cemeteries and rock art. 📷 kenntha88 More:

Trencrom Hill, Cornwall, on the St Micheal’s Way footpath. A Neolithic tor enclosure reused as an Iron Age hill fort. Earth and stone bank can still be seen along with signs of hut circles. According to folk lore, the giant Trecrobben, the giant of Trencrom, killed the wife of Cormoran by throwing a hammer over to St Micheal’s Mount. Site donated to the National Trust by Lt-col Tyringham as a memorial to those killed in WW1 & WW2. #neolithic #ironage #hillfort #history #folklore

Out for a walk at Wychbury hillfort, it's been a while since I did this. Today seemed to be about tree roots, and the hills Ents watched stoically as I took their pictures. A Butterfly even posed for me, quite beautifully.

It's been a busy week for visits. These are from a very recent visit to the Iron Age hill fort at Titterstone Clee. The hill rises to a height of 533m, and the view is definitely worth the climb!
The hill was originally a lot bigger, but has been quarried in two areas. The quarry buildings can still be seen, but should you visit please be careful as there are no safety provisions of any kind!

I took a trip to Titterstone Clee Hillfort today. Titterstone Clee is an Iron Age hillfort with a summit that's 533m above sea level.
It's been subject to quarrying, and there is evidence that the top of the fort was used for rituals in the Bronze Age.

Camelot.
Well, Cadbury Castle has been associated with Arthurian legend since Tudor times (possibly because of the nearby River Camel).
But it was an iron-age hillfort, refortified at the time of the 6thC - so it's Artherish.

Aerial view of Caer Caradoc in Shropshire (UK), a large multivallate #hillfort built around 2500 years ago.
Caer Caradoc measures approximately 450m by 160m, enclosing an area of around 3ha. Unusually, it also has an ‘engineered terrace’ or causeway leading to the hillfort on the eastern side.
Caer Caradoc is named for a semi-legendary British (Welsh/Cornish/Breton) prince, who may have held the site as part of his territory.

A defended enclosure, which probably dates to the Iron Age, on the south east facing slopes of a rounded hill towards the head of the Afon Glan-rhyd, Pembrokeshire. It consists of a circular enclosure with a concentric annexe. #HillFortsWednesday #Hillfort #Wales More...
