  2. Reason #28 why #FordMustGo

Ford's announcement of #Highway413 in 2022 was part of his strategy to open the Greenbelt and make developers rich. It doesn't make sense for commuters - most are traveling north-south - but it runs through large areas owned by Ford's favourite group of land developers. We're trading farmland and environmentally important areas of the province for urban sprawl and gridlock. 1950s era thinking.

  7. You know, if the province of #Ontario had kept the #Highway407 instead of selling it (thx, Harris), it would be _paid off_ by now, and it would be handling the traffic that the stupid #Highway413 is intended to alleviate. Instead, we get a new highway we don't need (paid for by tax $$), and the 407 remains criminally underutilized.

What a series of absolutely stupid decisions. Thanks #Conservatives! you jackasses.

  8. From the David Suzuki Foundation

    🧵1/4

The Ontario government has just announced it will fast-track construction of Highway 413.

This is terrible because the proposed mega-highway will destroy thousands of acres of farmland and hundreds of acres of Greenbelt.

In fact, as part of its announcement Ontario pledged to “accelerate” the expropriation of farmland and allow highway construction to proceed “around-the-clock, 24/7.”

    The situation is extremely serious.

  9. What's happened to Toronto's population density in the last 50 years? The old city got smaller (pink), towers were added to downtown (dark green), and everyone who couldn't afford a place moved to the suburbs (green).

Don't like highways and sprawl and paving over the Greenbelt? Then support more dense housing in the whole city.

  10. So are the feds just going to daintily step aside and let Ontario bulldoze vast swaths of precious countryside for the sake of building the unneeded Highway 413 or what? Sure starting to look that way.

  13. Highway 413 is a bad idea for the environment, but it’s also a bad idea for wasteful spending.
▪️413 would move ~7k people per hour
▪️for half the $ we could instead subsidize trucks to use the 407, moving 21k trucks per day off the 401
▪️ for 3/4 the $ we could expand service on Kitchener & Milton GO; launch a new GO train to Bolton; and build BRT or LRT in places like Brampton & Vaughan near the 413’s proposed route. This would move 22-29k per hour.
