The FT offers a useful summary of twenty years of decline in the UK's high streets.... if Andy Burnham thinks he can change the plight of the high street then he needs to both understand this complex of issues (and how they interact) and then find an alternative path for retail that will encourage people to visit high streets & spend there - a difficult talks that has defeated a range of people over the last decade!

Jim Waterson (founder/editor of investigative local news site London Centric) has a message for Andy Burnham; if you want to transform the high street & also catch a large number of tax evaders then empower the HMRC to deal with the dodgy, temporary shops that often spring up, avoid tax & then disappear having also (by virtue of their higher tax-free margins) raised retail rents in prime locations (like Oxford St.).

Another year, another notification of large-scale bank branch closures... as always this os predicated on people using branches less.
Of course, this is nothing to do with under-staffing branches so they are slower to see you, removing local discretion, or making the branches uncomfortable, of course.
Its yet on more way a service industry seems contemptuous of its users!

Does anyone know if this article is available online: 'Classifying Signs' by Harry Leeson, Monotype Recorder, Issue 01, Summer 2014?
I have a hard copy, and regularly find myself referencing it, but don't have an easy way to share it with others.
For those interested, it compares and contrasts sign regulations in different parts of London (Peckham and Hampstead) and how these affect the experience of being on the high street.
Please #boost for reach 😃
