  1. Here’s a #postcard showing Bob Jones University. Founded in Florida in 1927 as Bob Jones College, it moved to Tennessee in 1933 and then to South Carolina in 1947, becoming bob Jones University. The first three presidents were Bob Jones, Bob Jones Jr and Bob Jones III

I both want and don't want to google Unusual Films ...

  2. Here’s a #postcard showing Gordon’s College, #Aberdeen. #RobertGordon was a successful merchant who in 1750 founded a hospital to give poor boys a good start in life. This became Robert Gordon’s College in 1881 and a University in 1992

  3. Here’s a #postcard showing #Keble College, #Oxford

Keble College was founded in 1870 as a memorial to John Keble, doyenne of the Oxford movement which sought to make the Church of England a bit more Catholicky. (Yes, I know, this is a *very* inadequate summary of their beliefs.)

Monty Python fans may also remember Keble Bollege Oxford

  4. Here’s a #postcard showing #Lanchester College of Technology. Now part of #Coventry University, the name comes from Frederick Lanchester, automobile engineer and manufacturer. But, the name proved confusing (is it a typo for Lancaster or Manchester?) so Lanchester had to go

  5. Here’s a #postcard showing three aspects of #Oxford University. To the left the views show #Magdalen College (top) and #ChristChurch College (lower). The arms are those of #Merton College, and derive from the founder Walter de Merton, and Rochester, of which he was bishop

  6. Here’s a #postcard showing #Magee College. This was established in #Derry / #Londonderry in 1865 as a Presbyterian College teaching theology and arts, and has been secular since 1953. Associated over the years with many of Ireland’s universities, in 1969 it became part of the New University of Ulster, which in 1984 became #UlsterUniversity

  7. Here’s a #postcard showing the University of #York. This is the yew garden by Heslington Hall, and the sculpture to the left is Reclining Connected Forms by #HenryMoore, cast in 1969. I think the buildings to the rear are #Derwent College.

This spot now hosts Dryad by Austin Wright. I’m guessing the Moore went to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park

  8. Here’s a #postcard showing the #Whitworth Gallery. Founded in 1889 as the Whitworth Institute and Park, the building was completed in 1909 and has been part of the University of #Manchester since 1958

  9. Here’s a #postcard showing what was once the Bonar Law Memorial College (the Conservative party staff college), and then #Ashridge Business School, and is now part of #Hult International Business School

The medieval buildings were in fact built 1808-1814, replacing a genuine medieval priory which had existed since 1283, and which had once been owned by Elizabeth I

  10. Its #EightsWeek at #Oxford - the annual rowing competition between colleges. College boats race in pairs; against the college above or below them in the table. When a boat beats the one above they are said to have 'bumped' them

Here's a #postcard from 1906 which doubled as a scorecard. 120 years ago this is how memes worked! #Magdalen successfully defended their title

  11. Here's a #postcard of the Camberwell College of Art, part of the University of the Arts, London. Like many art schools, it had its origins in colleges of arts and crafts, aimed at training people for trades. Hence the 'Polytechnic' label on the card

It taught fine arts from the 1920s; in 1986 it became part of the London Institute, which in turn became University of the Arts London in 2004.

  12. Here's a #postcard showing the University of Winchester. Founded in 1840 as the Winchester Diocesan College, from 1928 to 2004 it was King Alfred's College

I'm currently reading the Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell, in which said Alfred has a central role. Hence today's share!

  14. Since thoughts are on Northern Ireland today, here's a #postcard showing Queen's University, Belfast

Ian Paisley Jr, DUP MP for North Antrim, and a current naysayer to the #WindsorAgreement, studied at QUB. Let's hope they made him reflective enough to be able to recognise the benefits of compriomise

  15. Here's a #postcard showing the University of Essex. This was established on a greenfield site in 1965, and is known (along with eg York and Sussex) as a plate glass university

The campus was originally intended to have many many tower blocks, and was modelled on the Tuscan town of San Gimignano

Here's a #postcard showing the University of Nottingham - this is the main building, shown peeking out from behind the Highfields Boating Lake.

The university is set in a fabulous park. You can hire boats on the lake, and there's #minigolf too

  17. Lloyd Cole, as in and the Commotions, is 62 today, so here's a #postcard showing Glasgow University, where he studied Law and Philosophy and met his future bandmates.

  18. Here's a #postcard of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge

One of Sidney Sussex's most famous/infamous alumni (you choose!) is Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of the Commonwealth.

Today is the 274th anniversary of the execution of King Charles I

  19. Here's a #postcard used by Southampton University at some point 1993-2008 to thank donors to a fundraising campaign.

Its strategy is now simply called "An excellent future" so clearly the previous version - "Towards an Excellent Future" - succeeded in getting the university there.

The sculpture is Two Figures by Barbara Hepworth

Here's a #postcard of #UCL - the nearest tube station for which is Euston Square, one of those early stations - to commemorate 160 years of subterranean students!

  22. Here's an unusual #postcard - it shows a ?school roll of honour, showing those who matriculated at the University of London

Matriculation is simply confirmation that you've met the entry requirements; in some universities its a ceremonial event (eg Oxbridge, Bishop Grosseteste). At London it was purely an admin function: I still have my 1986 matriculation certificate

I have no idea which school this roll of honour is at

  23. Morning, All

Here's a postcard showing the staff and students of St David's College, Lampeter, in 1905-06. Now part of University of Wales Trinity St David's, St David's College was founded in 1822.

Most of the students in 1905-6 would have been studying for a career in the church, but some would have been studying for a BA, albeit with some theology

  24. Here's a good postcard for today - its of the now-gone Chelsea Polytechnic. The science parts of the Poly were incorporated into King's College London in the 1980s

I love the insights cards like this give to what university life was like. Note particularly the absence of women students (unlike some other classes from the same series of cards), and smart dress code

  25. Today I'm sharing a #postcard of Homerton College Cambridge. Originally a society for educating Calvinist Ministers in the late C17, in 1768 it moved to Homerton in the East End of London, and to Cambridge at the end of the C19

It no longer focuses solely on education, but on all subjects, as other Cambridge Colleges

  26. Here's a nice #postcard for a cold day: its the University of London, back in 1905 when it was based at South Kensington

The card shows the Imperial Institute, now mostly demolished. The steps shown featured in the Ealing Comedy, The Titfield Thunderbolt, in the scene where the stolen steam locomotive goes down the museum steps

  27. Here's a postcard of #UlsterUniversity - and specifically, Magee College, Derry

Magee College was founded in 1865 and is named for its first benefactor, Martha Magee. Originally focusing on theology and arts, it became part of the New University of Ulster in 1969, having previously been part of the Royal University of Ireland and then associated with Trininty College Dublin
