  2. Academic social media hasn’t simply “moved on” from X: it has fragmented. Bluesky, LinkedIn and Mastodon now serve different scholarly publics, while X still retains reach.

  3. Interesting piece on the fragmentation of academic social media: The key question may no longer be where “Academic Twitter” went, but how academic publics are being redistributed across platforms.

An anecdote from Paul Halmos's autobiography:

In class. The lecturer works through a proof, on the blackboard. At some point he says "It is obvious that ..." and then states the relationship he relies on in his proof.

One student asks: Excuse me, Professor, I don't see why this is obvious. I don't understand it.

The lecturer nods, turns back to the blackboard, looks at the previous steps, thinks, chalks up some calculations in a corner, thinks some more.

Then he turns back to class. "Yes, as I said, it is obvious."

[Quoted from memory, details in the book will differ.]

    >> Choked with corporate buzzwords, restructuring typically involves eliminating, combining, and rebranding programs and curricula to meet alleged student demand for new kinds of learning. Interdisciplinarity—once a cutting-edge effort to unsettle the boundaries between modes of knowledge—is now a cudgel to beat departments and jobs into extinction. Faculty themselves are drafted into this “visioning” (cue the PowerPoint) of bold futures defined by relentless “dynamism” and “innovation.” <<
