I have added a new topic to my HIG for Macintosh series on Inspectors.
I would like to point out that I did this myself. I create the AppKit/SwiftUI code myself. I wrote the guidelines myself in Pages. I edited (to stitch) the screenshots myself. I did the HTML myself.
There was *no* use of AI here. This was done with my own brain, skill, and hands.
Let me know if there's anything I've missed or errors you may find on this page.

Does anyone here know if there is a collection of all the Apple Human Interface Guidelines for macOS, available as #PDF files for every OS version from OS X 10.0 to the present day?

Dear messaging app interface maintainers,
Please stop making me click "Read more..." to read just the last 3 words in a message. If it's long enough that it needs a short preview and a "Read more..." button, make the preview shorter so I can scroll past it more easily if I don't actually want to read more.
Don't make me think "you could have put the rest of the message in the space that "Read more..." takes up".

Flashback. I found a reminder of my July 2014 plan for a three-year transition away from Mac OS X.
From an October 2014 post:
― a screenshot of Apple bullshit in its revised Human Interface Guidelines.
"… Safari … displays webpage titles in the URL bar …"

With the exception of the latter, the most basic interaction guidelines are not mentioned. At all. It's almost as if their design leadership has a clear focus on visual appearance over everything else. You know, that UI/UX thing, except without actual UX. Oh. Wait…
Compare that to the first topics of the @elementary #HIG:

The inconsistency of Tahoe’s design
I even collected them all together, so the absurdity of the situation is more obvious.
It’s hard to justify Tahoe icons @ tonsky.meOh how the mighty have fallen.
I recommend reading the whole post. It’s an opus to how Tahoe UX design is an utter denunciation of the Macintosh Human Interface Guidelines – once considered to be the gospel of how interface design must be done.
I know it’s beating a dead horse at this pointI know it’s beating a dead horse at this point. Tahoe is a complete disgrace when it comes to user interface design. I don’t want to conflate this as denouncing Liquid Glass – although I still have issues with it. It’s how Tahoe is the worst implementation of it to the point where Mac OS isn’t what it is supposed to be.
Anyway, here’s to hoping all the changes with the leadership is all going to bear fruit sometime soon.
I’ve also realized that I might skip a mac OS version for the first time ever, esp now that I’ve successfully reverted my Mac back to Sequoia.

Did I create a whole-ass layout in SwiftUI that looks like a real, native Mac email app to be the hero image for my Macintosh Guidelines (Mario's Mac HIG) webpage?
Yes, yes I did...
(and don't forget to read my all new HIG topic on Sidebars!)

It’s hard to justify #macOS #Tahoe icons
https://tonsky.me/blog/tahoe-icons/Another good example how #Apple is sacrificing #usability.
Another example which was basically defined in the Apple #HIG and then forgotten, ignored or abused.

I think the next topic of my ongoing HIG modernization for Macintosh will be Windows and include topics such as:
• dialogs
• sheets
• alerts
• HUDs and Panels
• Titlebars and titlebar buttons/accessories
• click-throughamong the tons of other subtopics on macOS windows.

[en] Impact of social media on #democratic #discourse
A somewhat simple primer on "What is disinformation and how does the spread of disinformation affect #liberal #democracies worldwide?"
"This conventional understanding of disinformation is often tied to #platforms and #algorithms. ... But this definition seems to overlook the kind of #disinformation we now frequently see—namely that of political elites."

Today I had cause to get out my old #Acorn #RISCOS 3 Style Guide to demonstrate that the fundamentals of good #UX can date back well over 30 years - same with the #Apple #HIG.
I need to find a modern equivalent that clearly shows the basics for an "intro to usability" post. Most #designSystems seem overly focused on their components, rather than the principles of a good WIMP system.

Was this meant to be ironic?

Delightful little apps from Honghao Zhang, in shiny Mac OS X Tiger design: Lickable Menu Bar and Say No To Notch.
Finally enough room for all menu bar icons, in exchange for just 30 vertical pixels.

Apple's #HIG would tell you (or used to at least) to not use bottom bars in your Mac apps... but apps suffer from usability if Bottom Bars are a good fit for them yet omitted…
I really don't like how bottom bars, title bars, and accessory were basically all merged into the toolbar -- especially when full height sidebars and inspector sidebars now eat so much into their horizontal space too. Everything fighting for room.
Here's more info on them...
https://marioaguzman.github.io/design/toolbarguidelines/#BottomBars -
I saw some #Mac app screenshot posted earlier today with a drop down menu.
Immediately saw everything wrong & goes against the Mac #HIG.
Dividers in menus are only to group related menu items into sections. Do not use a divider in between every item. No dividers period if all your menu items are related to one another.
Section titles shouldn’t exist if you only have one section.
Menu item titles should be concise and definitely not be too word especially with a second-line subtitle.

I have added a new article to my own #HIG for Mac apps: Toolbar Guidelines.
This article goes over how to design, organize, and use built-in #NSToolbar & #NSToolbarItem objects and their features.
It also goes over system behaviors when toolbars are mixed with Sidebars, Inspectors, & multi-content layouts!
As a bonus, it also goes over bottom bars & accessory bars. Check it out and let me know what you think!

Great resource for UX researchers and retro historians.
Cool to see UI docs pre-desktop publishing that aren't published books.
