  1. #TopicOfTheDay: The #Rosetta #Stone is a stele composed of granodiorite inscribed with three versions of a decree issued in Memphis, Egypt.

The decree has only minor differences between the three versions, making the Rosetta Stone key to deciphering the Egyptian #Hieroglyphic scripts.

  2. A new #Hieroglyphic release is out now. Thanks to the exciting work done by @bnyro,
Hieroglyphic can now also recognize @typst symbols (a modern alternative to
LaTeX). Hardware-acceleration will now be preferred over using the CPU, when
    available, reducing power-consumption.

Head over to @flathub to download the latest version: flathub.org/en/apps/io.github.

  3. Thanks to an update of the underlying libraries the next release of #Hieroglyphic will automatically use hardware acceleration (i.e. NPU) when available, improving efficiency.

  4. I've just released a new version of #Hieroglyphic. Thanks to @bragefuglseth's design, the application is now responsive and can be used on mobile devices. This release also includes blackboard bold characters, as well as the usual improvements to the classification model. It also switches the runtime to the industry-standard ONNX runtime, which provides some minor speed enhancements and the possibility of (non-cpu) hardware acceleration in the future.

  5. I think I may have finally figured out how to type Middle Egyptian in Unicode:

    𓄤𓊵𓏏𓊪𓋴 (nfr-Htp-s AKA Neferhetepes)

Unfortunately, the formatting (sign arrangement) does not render correctly in normal software when pasted (as above). In this example the t and p uniliteral signs should be under the Htp sign as in the picture.

Still not quite there, yet, so still have to use images for proper display. 😞

  7. A new #Hieroglyphic update has been released, bringing a number of improvements:
    - Improved classifier, which now includes the nearly 500 user-contributed symbols, thanks to everyone who helped.
    - The backend infrastructure has been updated to make it easier for future improvements to the classifier.
    - The drawing area has been rewritten to use GTK4's rendering capabilities instead of Cairo.

  8. I just released a new version of #Hieroglyphic, this version replaces the classification algorithm with a machine learning model trained on the data previously used to classify symbols, improving classification speed and overall accuracy (although some symbols are now classified less accurately due to lack of good training data).
To improve the training data, it is now also possible to submit recognized symbols (this is opt-in).

  9. After 3 days of just deleting/moving images, I'm about 20% done, it's going to be a long boring couple of days. There are just so many wrong or unidentifiable ones.

Anyway, here's a teaser of what the next version of #Hieroglyphic will look like:

  10. After a bit of refactoring, though not necessarily related, #Hieroglyphic no longer (intentionally) leaks memory every time a symbol is recognized.

    #GNOME

  11. In the data that #Hieroglyphic uses to classify #TeXLaTeX symbols, all of these are symbols are used to classify λ.

Other symbols have similar data issues, I guess that explains why the classification is sometimes suboptimal.

  12. Sometimes I just stare in stupefied awe at this faculty which allows us to turn arbitrary squiggles on paper into meaningful thoughts in other people's heads. (also proud of myself for knowing that this says "he is having a better day than yesterday" [lit. "It is good for him this day compared to yesterday"] before I looked up the answer) #language #hieroglyphic

  14. I've released a new version of #Hieroglyphic. This version features a new app icon by @tbernard refines the UI and improves the symbol recognition speed. You can download it from Flathub (flathub.org/apps/io.github.fin).

  15. I'm planning to release a new version of #Hieroglyphic (github.com/FineFindus/Hierogly) next week. If you speak several languages and like to contribute to FOSS, this is a great opportunity.
The changes from the previous version are very minor, with a total of 20 strings.

Thanks to everyone who has translated the app so far.

  16. I'm trying to improve the speed of classification in #Hieroglyphic, wanted to start with a baseline profile, but between two runs the performance suddenly improved by ~10%, so I guess my work is done? :)
