  1. 🌫️ A tiny hic interrupts the breath, where nerves, timing, and older respiratory echoes briefly meet. Inside that small reflex, the body echoes a rhythm older than awareness.

✍️ Trace the reflex beneath every hic:

  2. Supra-supramaximal inspiration! An exercise that is 100% effective in treating hiccups for everyone who is able to do it (according to the one study we have):

    > First, exhale completely, then inhale a deep breath. Wait 10 seconds, then—without exhaling—inhale a little more. Wait another five seconds, then top up the breath again. Finally, exhale. Generally, you will find that your singultus is gone.

Works for me and my partner. Imagine if science had funding.

  3. Hey friend!!!

Are you plagued by the hiccups? Haven't found a method to get rid of them?

Try this simple trick and see if it works for you!

    1) Push out ALL your air in your lungs, as much as you can.

    2) Take a deep breath, and fill up your lungs completely.

    3) Hold your breath and wait about 10 seconds.

    4) If you hiccup while holding your breath, it may take another try or two. Start at Step 1. It should work very quickly!

    I hope this helps!

If you have another tried and true hiccup-defeating method, I'd love to hear it!!!

  5. Just had hiccups from eating a banana. I have always had a tendency to get hiccups over very little, all my life. But a few years ago I got a magic thing. I am not affiliated with them, I just want to save fellow hiccupers from the chest pain. Get one of these, they just work.

I have a couple, one for home and one for work. Stops hiccups in seconds. Amazing invention.

  6. My solution for curing hiccups (had them earlier this morning) is to eat/suck on a lime or lemon wedge. And make sure you make a, damn that's really sour face as well.

It's amazing how well that works for me.

  7. I used to get the hiccups all the time. I mean all the time. Not only that, but they were never ending. I tried all the things you’re supposed to try to get your hiccups to stop and nothing ever worked. Nothing. Ever.

Eventually the problem was solved by the great Bill Nye the Science Guy. He had a video… somewhere… that I watched that said to get your hiccups to stop you have to get your brain to stop waffling between the am-I-breathing and am-I-swallowing states and force it to do one or the other. He said to take a drink, but instead of drinking normally, take five small gulps in quick succession. Gulp-gulp-gulp-gulp-gulp.

I tried it. Lo and Behold, it worked.

    Oh the gloriousness, it worked.

Then I had the Gastric Bypass Surgery. Fast forward a little over two years and I was talking about something with my wife and it occurred to me that I had not had the hiccups once since the surgery. Not once. That was lucky, as Bill Nye the Science Guy’s cure would have been tough for me because I couldn’t drink fast anymore. I had to pause between sips, and the sips had to be small. As time continues to pass, that is less and less of an issue. I can’t gulp drinks like I used to, but it is not as difficult as it was in the early post-surgery days.

Which is lucky, because tonight after dinner… for the first time in two years and almost six months…

    I had the hiccups.

Bill Nye’s trick still works, thank goodness.

  8. First opportunity for me to try the #hiccups cure and it worked (n=1)

Apologies: I can’t recall the source.

    - First, exhale completely,
    - Then inhale a deep breath.
    - Wait 10 seconds
    - Without exhaling, inhale a little more.
    - Wait another five seconds, then top up the breath again.
    - Finally, exhale.

  9. Pro tip: if you #hiccup when you have water in your mouth, briefly and carefully (to prevent a spill) open your mouth to allow the carbon dioxide to escape before swallowing the water. That way, it won't hurt your throat when you swallow because you're not also swallowing CO2.

  10. @neil As a lifelong sufferer of #hiccups, "Generally" is doing a lot of work here. I've found this is no more or less effective than simply holding my breath as along as I can.

  11. According to The #Atlantic, this will very likely get rid of your #hiccups (#singultus).

" .... boils down to a simple breathing exercise. First, exhale completely, then inhale a deep breath. Wait 10 seconds, then—without exhaling—inhale a little more. Wait another five seconds, then top up the breath again. Finally, exhale. Generally, you will find that your singultus is gone."

  12. I had #hiccups tonight. Annoying but when out on the time it’s embarrassing. I feel I should impart my knowledge. Eat a slice of lemon, peel and all. Works every time

  13. #Hiccups, I feel like I should have outgrown them by now.

  14. ! I now have three remote / servers up and running and talking to each other! (and there was much rejoicing)

I nuked my server and replaced it with 22.04. Only some minor .

  15. If you get #hiccups.

Just tell your self your not a fish

Dunno why it works, but it works for me 🤷‍♀️

  16. Everyone has had the #hiccups, but have you ever thought about why we get them? This week Sophie Liebergall dives into the neuroscience behind several behaviors, like the hiccups, that we may have inherited from our distant ancestors. Read to learn about these interesting behaviors at the intersection of #neuroscience and #evolution.
