  2. Working the Façade

The manager had the best spot on the street: feet planted, hand on hip, watching three other men do the actual work. Two were up in a green cherry picker prodding at the glass of the HSBC building, and a third leaned on a rail inside and watched them. That's two layers of supervision for one stretch of façade. I stood behind the manager and watched the lot of them. His vest said "Manager", in case anyone on Queen Victoria Street was unclear on the hierarchy. We walked on towards South Bank.

  5. The Invisible Shift

A street cleaner with a bin bag in one hand, framed between a STOP sign and a no-right-turn sign. You couldn’t stage it better. I shot this from Drawbridge Street, watching the lunchtime crowd flow past him like water around a rock. What struck me was the contrast: dozens of people mid-stride, shopping or wandering around, and this one figure doing the quiet work that keeps the city ticking over.

His orange hi-vis jacket is the loudest thing in the frame, but he’s mostly unnoticed by everyone. The young lad in the camo jacket is walking towards me, a woman in a black top is mid-step, and behind the railings there’s a whole parade of shoppers who have no idea they’re in a photograph. I like that the two road signs bookend him: STOP on one side, no-right-turn on the other as if the street itself is giving him contradictory instructions. It’s one of those shots where the composition just fell into place, and all I had to do was not fumble the shutter.

What is it with Australian politicians + hi-vis? Does any other nation have their prime ministers dress up in fossil fuelled uniforms to show who they're owned by?

  7. @ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A8: Given we in Europe just switched the clocks from summertime to wintertime, here are some pics embracing the joy of having proper lighting on your cycle for #BeingSeen + wearing #HiViz clothes in the spirit of #VisionZero.

One is even #Halloween themed, although this was unintentional. 😇

(And no, this isn't #VictimBlaming 🙄, it's just common sense. Riding in black clothes w/o light in the night doesn't help anyone.)

  10. While biking on Pearl Street tonight, we noticed another active transportation user—this skateboarder, who we could very easily spot for blocks ahead of us. We eventually caught up with him and enjoyed chatting. He said his boss in Reno had gifted him that high-visibility jacket.

  11. The Guardian: Elusive deer spotted wearing high-vis jacket in Canada: ‘Who is responsible?’

"..no one in McBride, a mountain community in British Columbia, can figure out how a local deer came to be wearing a zipped-up high-visibility jacket – or why the day-glo-clad cervid has been so hard to track down....

Sgt Eamon McArthur of the BC conservation officer service told CTV News he did not want to speculate on how the jacket ended up on the cervid, although he noted: “Deer are not predisposed to wearing clothes.”..."

  12. 'The new study from Australia found that an alarming number of people do not see cyclists as human, 30 per cent saying they considered those riding #bicycles as less than fully human'

    road.cc/content/news/reaction-

'yesterday's article about the new research from Queensland University of Technology and Flinders University in Australia — showing that #cyclists wearing helmets or high-visibility clothing are dehumanised more than those without — has certainly got people talking.'
