Decided to get formal with this design and lock down some real measurements and factors, including working out the variable vs constant shift.
Turns out that for my model, one HU is 42!

Today I have learned that there is a crater on the moon from just a couple of years ago caused by "a comet or asteroid roughly the size of a humpback whale".
Oh no, not again. 😆

A significant birthday for #Elite this year - the game is now 42 years old. Definitely the answer to Life, The Universe and Everything! The #MostlyHarmless combat ranking is another connection to Douglas Adams' #HHGTTG. I wonder what he would have made of #EliteDangerous?

It's been a while since I've listened to them, but there are also radio remakes of classic TV sitcoms, e.g. Yes, Minister; Dad's Army; Steptoe & Son etc. If you can access #Radio4Extra , you can catch them.
And of course, #HHGTTG The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy began on radio. Does it qualify as a "sitcom"? I dunno but still great fun!
Going to add a bunch of shows in this thread to my wishlist.

I may have evoked groans with colleagues. They are discussing the most intelligent colour.
I am with team blue, because of the Hooloovoo, a species of hyper-intelligent shades of blue. -

Douglas Adams in 1978 predicted Terence Tao’s role as Vroomfondel in the modern AI debate: “We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty!”

What a time to be alive! Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was practically a bible to my cold-war veteran physics-nerd 11-year-old self, discovering it during a Radio4 rebroadcast of the first series and subsequently stealing the paperback book from my sister (who didn’t really get it) – and I have the books, the LPs, recordings of the show on C60 cassette tapes, various other media…
And now it’s all coming true!
Compare (edited for brevity)
FOOK: What’s the problem?
MAJIKTHISE: I’ll tell you what the problem is mate: demarcation. That’s the problem.
VROOMFONDEL: We demand that demarcation may or may not be the problem.
MAJIKTHISE: You just let the machines get on with the adding up and we’ll take care of the eternal verities, thank you very much. By law the quest for the ultimate truth is quite clearly the unalienable prerogative of your working thinkers

If you’re not familiar with 1970s British Trade Union language, “demarcation disputes” were/are turf wars between trade unions (or even individual employees) where one party claims that another party is “taking their job” thereby putting their continued employment at risk; for instance newspaper print-typesetters fearing the arrival of IT nerds with software that would replace (or, even worse, dissolve the need for) them.

I have been watching the AI Wars play out for several years with this at the back of my mind, but until today I did not believe that anyone in the academy would be daft enough to suggest such a thing; absolutely we can expect technophobe gammons in the House of Lords and the US Senate to demand “AI Kill Switches” to stop people doing math… but I honestly never expected an actual mathematician to propose the same.

Well there's always the whale that said "I wonder if it'll be friends with me?"
While a small minority of us would be the bowl of petunias.

Tests on web pages should never be seen as definitive diagnostic tools, but as a veteran #HHGTTG fan, the fact that I got a score of 42 in Prof. Simon Baron-Cohen's free online autism quotient test seems pretty bang-on to me. #ActuallyAutistic
(Anything over 33 "indicates significant Autistic traits".)

...and yes, #HHGTTG is both a book and a movie. Well, a trilogy of five books and a movie.
