I 1938 fremførte Orson Welles’ The Mercury Theatre on the Air deres udgave af H. G: Wells’ “Klodernes kamp” – som naturligvis blev legendarisk, fordi folk opfattede det som den rene og skære sandhed og frygtede for deres liv. Marsboerne angreb, og intet kunne stå imod dem. Den noget skrattende version af englænderne, der bliver udsat for deres egne kolonialistiske tendenser, kan du høre her.
Men det er én ting. Noget andet er reaktionen bagefter.

I have been reading the comments of the Newspapers with great amusement. This is a wonderful example of how our American people would meet a situation of its kind, whether
it would be a “War of the Worlds” or a War by other Nations. They lose their heads, they are not trained to meet an emergency; such training should begin in childhood in our schools. I have this sense of foreboding that all of Wells' discussion of amateurism of the Bolshevik government may apply to what comes next in the US if the Trump/Vance/MAGA era comes to persist 6-10 years rather than alternating with Democratic bouts. He reiterates that they are only 5% of #Russia ns, but the only ones with a thread of an idea holding them together. Wells sees such as essential even if that idea is entirely false. On p.88 he's complaining that Orthodox priests offer nothing. #hgwells

I'm now trying to finish the book with the wayback machine (which we support monthly.) But it's not the same. The annotations are less interesting (and not potentially a friend's relative's) and there's no book. My mother in law collects books of that era, but unfortunately only children's.
