  3. #Linux Might Drop The #Apple #HFS / HFS+ #FileSystem Kernel Driver Support
#Apple no longer supports the Hierarchical File System on the latest versions of #macOS itself and in prior releases was read-only support since macOS 10.6 for HFS itself. The newer HFS+ file-system does continue to be supported by Apple. Linux support for HFS has been poor and ill-maintained and it looks like the kernel drivers could be on their way out.

  5. Linux might no longer support HFS/HFS+

The antique filesystems, HFS and HFS+, were used in old Macs going back to Septmber 17th, 1985, with the former being used first, then the latter. They also have alternative names, called Mac OS Standard and Mac OS Extended.

During development of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard released in August 28th, 2009, Apple decided to stop all support for read-write HFS and HFS+ filesystems, making users be unable to write to any file, but they still could read from such volumes. In macOS Catalina, Apple finally removed the filesystem support from the Darwin kernel, making it impossible to use disks that are still formatted with such filesystems.

We appear to have reached the end of support for the two antique filesystems in Linux, too, because, this year, the prominent Linux developer from Microsoft stated that, via Mastodon:

Let’s try and remove #hfs and #hfsplus by the end of 2025. They have been orphaned since 2014 and are turning into a maintenance burden.

If you’re still using those filesystems after the support ending period, there is a chance that you could use those filesystems again via user-space filesystems, except that you won’t have the same experience, including the lack of support of writing to files for HFS+.

  7. They call it "retruthing"

I mean, he's also calling for an invasion of my home country, but the "retruthing" things is just... wow.

  8. Wow - I had never heard of the "HFS pixel" in the Macintosh Finder before now. Is this common knowledge?

  9. This is a destructive OPSEC failure.
PoC code is trivial to find along with a simple Censys query to uncover vulnerable hosts. The code itself supports a TXT file of URLs so....spray and pray method to find targets. Certain campaigns used #XMRig, GoThief, and backdoors like #Gh0stRAT and #PlugX.

It should go without saying to not make your file servers open to the public but some didn't get the memo.

  10. #SSD Question.
I use an external 2TB SSD for climate and weather data storage and analyses. Just citizen science, not professional.
The files I generate during analyses are mostly small and numerous.

Today, I had the case that a for-loop for listing all *.csv in one folder created a list with 12 million rows. But the folder really only held 3500 files.

So I thought, maybe yesterday's analyses that quickly created and deleted and created thousands of files was too much for the SSD index and it created 12mio (not thousands, but 12 mio!)

Or it is the internal SSD and MacOS indexing process that created those 12million ghost files?

    Grateful for tips and tricks!

I am in the process of restoring my macOS on the re-formatted internal drive, and also backing up the suspicious external SSD to then re-format it.

edit: this time round, I use HFS+ as SSD format.

  11. I fixed it! Now I can mount #HFS CDs which have a slash in their volume name on a modern m1 Mac!
Creating an image file using fuseHFS produces the same file as using an older Intel based Mac with native HFS support.

I will push it to github tomorrow.

  12. I made some progress in understanding how the #fusehfs stuff works. I found the code where it actually reads the volume name and other stuff. Hopefully tomorrow I can make some changes for testing.

  13. Today I got #fusehfs to compile against fuse-t again.
Tried to find why volumes with a slash in their name won't mount.
No luck so far, but hadn't much time to figure this out. I found some logic to swap / and : though.

Hopefully I will have more time tomorrow.

  14. I got a cheap usb floppy drive! "Tendak" brand.

Testing real quick on my Raspbian Pi3.
Mounted and read msdos 1.44m and 720k format. Expected.

    Read 1.44m Mac HFS! Nice.

Would not read Tandy 600 360k. Sad but expected.

I thought I had some minix or ext2 disks but I guess not?

Sometime when it's not bedtime i'll hook it up to the RISC OS Pi and see what it thinks.

Mostly just seeing if a Pi could handle a device that wants 500 mA!

  16. @m2m I read is designed for SSDs which my external drive is not. Has it been fine for you on a non-SSD?

+ (sometimes called the OS X / macOS format?) has support until 2040 so it's still worth considering if it can reliably work in Windows somehow...
