  1. Fossil fuels like propane and isobutane, commonly used for BBQs, are helping replace potent HFC refrigerants, significantly cutting greenhouse gas emissions and showing that practical solutions can slow global warming. japantimes.co.jp/commentary/20 #commentary #worldnews #cop30 #hfcs #co2 #carbondioxide #greenhousegasses #climatechange #globalwarming #pollution

  2. The #Biden admin, which wrote the #HFC #regulations to enact that law, hoped to eliminate the equivalent of 4.5 billion metric tons of #CO2 by 2050, or about 3 years’ worth of #climate #pollution from the #electricity sector.

Unlike efforts to curb #FossilFuels, plans to reduce #HFCs have won broad support from both #Democrats & #Republicans, as well as industry groups & environmental organizations.

  3. Phasing out #HFCs worldwide could avert up to 0.5°C of #GlobalWarming by the end of the century, which would go a long way toward averting the worst consequences of #ClimateChange. In fact, it was #Trump, during his first term, who signed into #law a measure directing the #EPA to ratchet down the #climate pollutant. The provision was tucked into a sweeping Covid relief bill that passed Congress at the tail end of his presidency.

  4. #HFCs, which are commonly referred to as #SuperPollutants, are thousands of times more potent than carbon dioxide at warming the planet.

But Lee Zeldin, the #EPA administrator, said the #Biden admin’s plan for cutting the production & consumption of the #chemicals, which aimed for an 85% reduction by 2036, did not give companies enough time to meet their deadlines.

  5. The #Trump admin plans to relax a #Biden-era rule that requires grocery stores, air-conditioning companies, semiconductor plants & others to sharply & rapidly reduce powerful #GreenhouseGases used in cooling equipment.

The #EPA plan would unravel what many industry leaders & environmentalists view as a rare success for the #climate: a bipartisan agreement that those man-made #chemicals, known as #hydrofluorocarbons, or #HFCs, should be rapidly phased down.

  7. Rule-of-thumb advice how to avoid the ultra processed food in your buying choices.

    * packaged #food item
    * has five or more ingredients on the label
    * sugar, salt, oils, fats, stabilizers, preservatives on the label
    * added flavoring, colorants or texturing ingredients
    * ingredients not found in nature, such as high fructose corn syrup #HFCS

  8. I heard that RFK Jr. plans to go after high fructose corn syrup.

I do believe that this food additive is quite bad for us.

So RFK Jr. is right about this.

Should I jump with joy?? Haha, hardly. I bet he's going to want to replace HFCS with antifreeze.

  15. #ExtremeHeat is pushing #India to the brink. One obvious solution is also a big part of the problem

By 2050, India will be among the first places where temperatures will cross survivability limits, according to climate experts.

"Ramesh, who goes by one name, says he borrowed $35 – nearly half of his monthly salary – from relatives to buy a second-hand air conditioner for his home.

"'It makes a noise, sometimes it releases dust,' he said. But he cannot do without it.

By 2050, India will be among the first places where temperatures will cross survivability limits, according to #climate experts. And within that time frame, the demand for #AirConditioners (AC) in the country is also expected to rise nine-fold, outpacing all other appliances, according to a recent report by the International Energy Agency (IEA).

"Ramesh’s predicament encapsulates the paradox facing the world’s most populous country of 1.4 billion: The hotter and wealthier India gets, the more Indians will use AC. And the more they use AC, the hotter the country will become.

"Like refrigerators, many air conditioners today use a class of coolants called #hydrofluorocarbons, or #HFCs, which are harmful #GreenhouseGases. And even more problematically, air conditioners tend to use large amounts of electricity, generated by the burning of #FossilFuels."
