It feels good to be stocked up again. I knew I was running low, but I didn't realize that I had 4 units which were completely built except that they lacked the Raspberry Pi. I thought those units were ready to ship!
I still did have the one #HestiaPi on my bench that I've been using to do testing of the upcoming v1.5 image that I could have cannibalized, but much better to just be properly stocked!

It's not every day that I order $300 worth of Raspberry Pi Zero 2 boards. 😅
People think these boards cost the MSRP of $15/each. The truth is one board is $25.82-$29.64 after tax and shipping. That's not with a power supply, SD card, case or anything. Just the board, and the higher side of that price range includes headers.
This is why I order in bulk. While it does nothing about the sales tax, it does help with shipping costs. I then pass those savings on to people who want to buy a #HestiaPi

I had an insane push this weekend to get #HestiaPi & #OpenHAB to be compatible with a heat pump HVAC system. I'm testing it by running LEDs through the relays to see when they flip on.
I have one prototype that I manually configured. I have the basics down: heating, cooling, ruining the fan, 2-stages for both heating and cooling.
Next up, boosting and tons of regression testing. I rewrote huge parts of many of the roles and made serious logic/flow changes.
I need sleep too!

We're getting close to releasing a maintenance update. No functional changes, but it will extend the security updates for another two years.
There's more testing to do, but hopefully that will go smoothly.
I hope to have another update out soon after that, which will be the same deal: no functional changes, but yet ANOTHER two years of security patches!
When I say long term support, I mean it!

A rare look at the #EU version of the #HestiaPi with the 240V AC -> 5V DC power adapter (the black rectangle in the photo). Everything else is the same hardware. It also uses the same software, just different settings.
I hate to ship these across the ocean, but there's literally not a single person, #hackerapace or #Makerspace in the EU who is willing to build these #OpenSource #thermostats. So I make them available, and ship them all the way from America.

Help wanted: test the latest release of the #HestiaPi SD card image.
https://community.hestiapi.com/t/debian-12-bookworm-image-testing-v1-5-dev/2104
If you have a device, plea help. We're trying to get more people to test this out. The new image should work just like the previous version except it'll get another 2 years of security updates.
No new features, just stability and long term support.

Less than 2 weeks left until the old #Nest #thermostats go through their metamorphosis to become dumb thermostats.
Honestly, it might be a win for the owners in terms of #privacy. But if they want a wifi enabled thermostat that is open source and will never abandon them like this, please suggest a #HestiaPi.
You can make one yourself, buy a kit, or buy a prebuilt unit. If it ever breaks you can #repair it. If it doesn't do what you want, you can customize it. #FOSS #OpenSource #OpenHardware ❤️

It warms my heart to hear from people who were about to build their own thermostat from scratch and then found out about the #HestiaPi project.
Now they can get a leg up on their #thermostat and just focus on the thermostat rules instead of the #hardware, #software and so forth.
Meanwhile, we get another collaborator and hopefully can integrate the new code that implements the additional features they want.
win-win!
#OpenSource is awesome.

Big news: Permanent price drop & international shipping!
Down to $150 fully loaded, assembled, flashed and ready to plug & play in North America.
Also, I've enabled shipping to Canada and Europe. I hope I don't regret that. 😅

Next month, Google is going to make some Nest thermostats not-so-smart.
This can never happen with a #HestiaPi. It's not even possible because it doesn't depend on some third party cloud service. Everything is run inside your home, and it's yours, forever. ❤️
The HestiaPi is also #repairable and #upgradable. In summary, it's better by design.
-
The #HestiaPi is a #prime alternative to the corporate smart thermostats that you can buy on #Amazon.
It's also on sale from July 8-11, because I want people to invest in a #sustainable #thermostat instead of #PlannedObsolescence.

This doesn't have anything to do with the #HestiaPi (yet 😉), but AirGradient is one step closer to fixing their compilation instructions.
This is exciting news because once their code is modified to stop phoning home to the company's server, I plan on adding documentation to the HestiaPi project on how to configure the #AirGradient ONE to act as a remote temperature and humidity sensor.
If you've ever had a #thermostat mounted too close to the door, you understand why this is important.

I have one clicky edition #HestiaPi left and I'm having a blowout sale. If you were on the fence, now is a good opportunity.

It requires hardware modifications to both the HestiaPi and the LCD, and a little Bash script, but it's possible to have the backlight turn completely off when not in use. Tapping the screen causes it to turn back on.
There's a writeup on the community forum which I will be including in the owner's manual.
#OpenHardware should be #hackable like this. I also plan on making this possible to do without hardware modification to the #HestiaPi on the next #hardware revision of the PCB. #OpenSource

I've been trying to recreate another person's work with a more expensive LCD touchscreen that is able to turn off its backlight.
They are using different #hardware and #software, but have been very helpful in posting about their work and sharing scripts.
I think it will be possible to get it working with the #HestiaPi if I do one small hardware modification. Can't really be sure until it's tested, but I'm hopeful.
If I get it, instructions will be added to the owners manual. ❤️🙂 #FOSS #IoT

I'm having a blowout #sale on the clicky version of the #HestiaPi #thermostats!
https://www.tindie.com/products/eternalsunshine/hestiapi-one-clicky/
No #cloud service here.
No data collection.
No company who is going to discontinue the model and leave you without #security updates.
No dystopian nonsense!
-
I hope I don't regret this, but I just put in an order for $250 worth of temperature sensors to be made with a custom designed board.
If successful, it'll lower the cost of all models of the #HestiaPi. At the same time, it will also help alleviate supply chain issues.
If unsuccessful, it's a lot of money down the drain. Go big or go home, right? #IoT #electronics

I'm working on a new #prototype for the #HestiaPi #PCB. All revisions up to now had some extra long headers (but not too long, or the case can't close!) which connected directly to the touchscreen. This meant you had to line up the pins perfectly while putting on the shell of the case. It it tedious the first few times.
This #experimental version uses a ribbon cable instead, so you attach the screen before attaching the cover.
Pic is peeking in through the side of the case. #IoT #thermostat

Today I begin the journey of automatically building a #HestiaPi image based on #Debian 12 (#bookworm). So far I discovered:
1.) #RaspberryPi no longer automatically expands the partition & filesystem to take up the entire disk
2.) my /boot/ssh file **did** turn on SSH, but it seems takes longer to start and IIRC my detection can't wait for the console message because on older systems it wasn't echoed to the screen 🤔Running `sudo raspi-config --expand-rootfs` does work, but it auto-reboots 🫤

Happy to say that the #HestiaPi clicky edition is back in stock.
I put together 5 units yesterday. I have to wait for some #RaspberryPi boards, temperature sensors and screens to come in before I can fully test each unit, but if someone ordered one today I could mix and match parts from the silent model that I have ready to go.
It feels good to have built up this level of inventory. I want to keep giving people a choice of #sustainable, #upgradable, #OpenSource #hardware!
-
Still no #RaspberryPi Zero 2 W boards in stock in America. I'm checking back a few times a week to try to get some when they are back in stock somewhere.
In the meantime, I still have 3 #HestiaPi thermostats in stock if anyone is interested.
As @CyberpunkLibrarian said:
"I firmly believe that handling your own data, running your own services, and housing it all on your own hardware is a radical act of anti-capitalism and personal expression."

Good news: I updated my inventory on the #tindie store. #HestiaPi thermostats in stock!
Bad news: #RaspberyPi Zero 2 W boards are not available in the US, and the international stores generally have higher prices, higher taxes (VAT), and more expensive shipping.
I'm going to wait and see if they become available before my current supply is completely sold out.
I thought these days were behind us when I saw stores inventories replenished and purchase limits lifted a while back.
-
Today I found that a brand new #RaspberryPi Zero 2 that I bought was dead on arrival. So that's about $20 down the drain.
This is why I test every unit I build. Rare junk like this does happen sometimes and I want to make sure I do my best to never let a fellow #OpenSource enthusiast down! ✊ #HestiaPi #OpenHardware #foss #hardware #IoT

The main thing slowing down adoption of open source smart thermostats is that people don't know it exists
The #HestiaPi has is about the same price as the Google Nest was, and having been around for 5 years, we've already outlived most of Google's products!
If you like the idea of having technology that isn't run by a mega-corp, isn't harvesting your data, doesn't require their cloud to operate and doesn't get discontinued, please spread the word about HestiaPi
-
Today is a big day for me. After years of building #HestiaPi smart thermostats, I finally broke even! #OpenHardware might just be financially sustainable after all.
So being the clever businessperson that I am, what do I do? Cut all my prices!

Today marks five years, to the day, that the #HestiaPi project was funded.
https://www.crowdsupply.com/makeopenstuff/hestiapi-touch
5 years and the software is still supported, the #hardware is still available, and the #community is still here. I ❤️ this project.

You have the cybertruck, now get the only #OpenSource #thermostat to match!
No, seriously though, I only have one gray case and I don't plan on making any more. I'm not even sure why I have this one to be honest.
And just in case anyone actually wants this, I put an option for a silver case in the store. The case you see is what you get.

Today I tried to help move the #Proxmox provider for #terraform a little closer to a stable release. It wasn't much, but I think it helped.
I also am trying to help get instructions to compile the #AirGradient One #firmware from source. If I can get people to reproduce the behavior I'm seeing, I am hopeful that we can get this nailed down. I'm keen on getting familiar with this because it is #ESP32 based, and we want to make an ESP32 based model of #HestiaPi
Gotta keep at it!
-
My #HestiaPi adventures got me interested in #ESP32 #microcontrollers and now I'm going to become a firmware developer for the #AirGradient ONE.
This is why I don't have any free time. As soon as I get 3-4 hours to myself, I find a new #OpenSource project to contribute to.
#OpenHardware for life, yo!
-
I'll be putting in another order to stock up on parts soon. I need to batch order up as much as possible in order to offer #HestiaPi #thermostats for the prices I do.
My next order is going to be from the evil Amazon because I can't find the LCD touchscreens or AC to DC converters elsewhere.
When I ran the numbers to do my taxes last month, I saw I had spent thousands of dollars on thermostat parts and still have not broken even yet. It's because I want them to be as inexpensive as possible! 😎
-
I think I may have found the pogo pin I have been looking for. This is super exciting because it will allow me to build #HestiaPi #thermostats with a #RaspberryPi Zero 2 W AND still have a functional reset button on the side.
Currently, I can build units with the Zero 2, but there's no way to reset it. Instead, you have to flip the breaker to the furnace/air conditioning to power cycle it (& can't access the web interface). While it's not the end of the world, it's a "nice to have".
-
I'm doing my taxes and I found that I'm only about $115 in the hole over the past 3 years for my efforts to make #HestiaPi #thermostats available to people!
This is good news because I've spent thousands of dollars on this project, so it feels really good to be almost there.
Of course if I got to $1 in the black, it'd mean I was paid a dollar for literally thousands of hours of work, but I'm just going to not think about that 🫣
