  1. A California sea lion surfing the waves during the herring spawn last year.

Do you know how to identify a California sea lion? They have a bump on their head.

  2. Bald eagles and sea lions fighting over herring that have just spawn as you can see from the colour of the sea.

Photo taken during my photo tours in the last few days on the east coast of Vancouver Island.

The herring spawn is still going strong and I have some availability this week for tours: catherinebabault.com/workshops

  3. I photographed this river otter last year in March during the herring spawn. It was rubbing its back on a boulder. Probably had a belly full of herring. Looked very healthy and happy.

  10. California sea lions very relaxed, some sleeping even, in the sea where herring has just spawned.

California sea lions have a darker coat than Steller sea lions and they also have a bump on their forehead.

  11. Food chain observable from the shoreline of Vancouver Island at this time of year:
Herring > seals & sea lions > orcas

  12. If you are in the Qualicum Beach area, a large spawn has started there yesterday. You'll see plenty of fishing boats at sea too.

  13. Spawn observed yesterday at the south end of Cortes Island and at the south end of Hernando Island. No spawn observed between Campbell River and French Creek. Effective 14 hrs today, roe herring seine fishery is open in Subareas 14-1 to 14-13, and 14-15 in the Strait of Georgia. (photos from my archives)

  14. Back home from scouting. Lots of Steller sea lions and gulls catching herring. Lots of bald eagles. Saw 3 humpback whales in the distance. Had a close encounter with a river otter.
I expect wildlife activity is going to increase in the next few days and into next week once the herring start to spawn.

  16. Gull are opportunistic eaters. This gull spotted a Steller sea lion emerging from the sea with a tasty herring in its mouth. The sea lion immediately went back in the sea with its precious meal.

  17. March 2019: The herring have just released their milt in eel grass in shallow waters on the coast of Vancouver Island. The sea has turned a milky turquoise colour. Gulls are frantically picking up herrings washing ashore.

  18. Early herring spawn in Hesquiat Harbour (Jan 11), Rondeau Pt ((Feb 5), Hesquiat Pt (Feb 6), Anton Spit and Esperanza Inlet (Feb 8). I am keeping a close eye on the herring spawn for my photo tours in March. It usually happens in March in my area.

  19. Yup, that’s what all the bird fuss was about. And sea lion fuss. And human fuss. Billions of herring eggs floating in the bay, turquoising the water, and squishing up the beach. Incredible.

Not in this photo: THE POD OF 5 ORCAS THAT SWAM THROUGH THE HERRING SCHOOL AN HOUR PREVIOUS WHILE I WAS SLEEPING AND MY “FRIEND” CHOSE NOT TO WAKE ME UP

  20. First day of my workshop on the Herring Spawn on Vancouver Island. Lots of wildlife including a pod of orcas spotted from the shoreline. They were feeding and gulls were enjoying the scraps.

  21. The feeding frenzy has increased since the opening of fishery for herring yesterday. Hundreds of birds: eagles, gulls and ducks, Steller and California sea lions, and seals are feasting on the large schools of herring. 23. Steller Sea Lion with the catch of the day. Photo taken at the end of winter during the herring spawn on the coast of Vancouver Island. It's an annual event and I always look forward to it. There is so much wildlife to photograph!
