Well, now I have someone else to worry about. When I left in early May, there were three tame iguanas this size and one big one, "Don." So far this is the only one I've seen since I got back. She immediately remembered me and came up looking for mealworms.
We've had a poor monsoon season here, so there has been very little to eat, yet she looked kinda chonky. I have been assuming she was gravid. A little late in the season for that, but not entirely so.
This morning, though, I saw her trying to eat something and eventually swallow it down. Then I realized it was a date from the neighbor's Phoenix canariensis, the date palms that produce little round fruits. They are 90% hard seed with a coating of sweet fruit rind.
It's hard to believe she can pass that seed! And now I wonder if her chonk is just her belly filling up with the rock-hard seeds 😱
I'm going to ask some #herpetologist friends.
