An obscure academic history of Georgian-era garden ornamentation of the 'hermitage' and what remains of this curious historical obsession; reading it for the 𝘓𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘕𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘥𝘴 podcast, but to what uses I will put it I won't here say!

  3. From this day in 2017 when we visited the State Hermitage museum in St Petersburg, Russia, here's the Benois Madonna by Leonardo da Vinci, probably painted around 1480 CE and likely da Vinci's first independent artwork.

  5. Trees at the Hermitage. One of the tallest trees in Britain used to be here, a 61m (200ft) Douglas Fir, but it came down in winds in 2017. Still quite a lot of big ones though...

  7. For #DoorsDay here's an ornate, 15th century door created by a Dutch artist located in the Hermitage, St Petersburg, a quite fabulous museum to which we're sadly never likely going to be able to make a return visit.

  11. Did Leonardo da Vinci paint a nude Mona Lisa?

It is one of the most tantalising – and entertaining – puzzles in art, stretching from the Louvre to the Loire via, well, Norfolk.

The Guardian's art critic thinks he has just worked it out.

  12. CW: russia's war of aggression against Ukraine

Good news! #Poland has arrested Alexander #Butyagin, head of ancient archaeology at russia's #hermitage. He is wanted by #Ukraine for looting a Ukrainian heritage site on temporarily occupied #Crimea. If extradited, this would be a long-overdue step towards accountability for the kremlin's war criminals and agents of influence in academia who too often still freely travel and spread the aggressor's agenda throughout Europe. united24media.com/latest-news/

  14. Speaking of the #Hermitage, the Peacock Clock is one of the most extraordinary surviving 18th‑century #automata. Created in the late 1770s by James Cox, it was bought by Prince Grigory Potemkin for Catherine the Great, shipped to Russia in pieces, and reassembled there.

  16. Last night I filmed comets and meteors and found myself reflecting on the thin line between solitude and isolation—what it takes, what it returns—and the irony of being listed as a hermit in an age that rewards noise. If it resonates, I’d be grateful for a read/share:

  18. The Cumberland Nature Trail, St. Vincent

What began as a search for a rare parrot became a hike through tropical green, full of guavas, old friendships, and quiet epiphanies. On the Cumberland Trail in St. Vincent, the forest didn’t give me the perfect bird photo. It gave me something better.
