Genetic analysis of avocados shows that the two different daily timings of opening of male and female flowers (either female in the morning and male in the afternoon, or vice-versa) is regulated by two alleles of a single gene. This gene is 40 million years old and is present in at least 26 other tree species, so its effect may be more widespread.

CW: speculative evolition, sexuality
also i was exploring the idea the idea of #hermaphroditism within a sapient species, and whether it would be helpful in the development of civilisation. simultaneous hermaphroditism would be slightly costly, but just having two genitals doesn't sound like a huge cost. parents alternating in pregnancy sounds like a sensible arrangement, and in general it would allow for more egalitarianism like that.
