I can see why this 1927 work, with its drugs, sex, extended passages on the mysteries of personal identity with a sprinkling of "Asian" philosophy was a success with counterculture devotees in the sixties and seventies; you can shelve it with your Carlos Castanedas and the Tibetan Book of the Dead. I have to say that I found much of what engaged the hippie reader to consist of hokey pseudoprofundities.
Nevertheless, the novel interested me as a product of the German twenties - the encounter of traditions of learning and Bildung with the new urban world of jazz, night clubs, and emancipated women.

Hermann Hesse on Solitude
Most men, the herd, have never tasted solitude. They leave father and mother, but only to crawl to a wife and quietly succumb to new warmth and new ties. They are never alone, they never commune with themselves. And when a solitary man crosses their path, they fear him and hate him like the plague; they fling stones at him and find no peace until they are far away from him. The air around him smells of stars, of cold stellar spaces; he lacks the soft warm fragrance of the home and hatchery.
A man must be indifferent to the possibility of falling, if he wants to taste of solitude and to face up to his own destiny. It is easier and sweeter to walk with a people, with a multitude — even through misery. It is easier and more comforting to devote oneself to the “tasks” of the day, the tasks meted out by the collectivity.
Solitude is not chosen, any more than destiny is chosen. Solitude comes to us if we have within us the magic stone that attracts destiny.
Blessed be he who has found his solitude, not the solitude pictured in painting or poetry, but his own, unique, predestined solitude. Blessed be he who knows how to suffer! Blessed be he who bears the magic stone in his heart. To him comes destiny, from him comes authentic action.

Hermann Hesse juega con el concepto de la dualidad a lo largo de la novela existencialista “El lobo estepario”. A pesar de la densidad de las ideas vertidas en sus páginas, el ritmo narrativo es ágil. La convivencia imposible entre el lobo y el humano, que constantemente se solapan, hacen sufrir al protagonista. El lobo estepario es la otra mitad de Haller, quien, divorciado y con mala reputación por asuntos políticos, lleva una vida ermitaña en un pequeño apartamento alquilado, alejado del ruido y de los asuntos mundanos. Siempre se ha sentido diferente, al margen de la sociedad, demasiado taciturno para este mundo. Pero todo eso cambia cuando conoce a Armanda, la misteriosa cortesana que lo introduce en un mundo de placeres sensoriales. Con ella aprenderá a bailar, a disfrutar de ir a fiestas, e incluso volverá a enamorarse. Una vez más, Armanda es todo lo que no es Haller: placer, sensualidad y momento presente. Su personalidad andrógina (como sugiere su nombre) se revela no solo como el lado opuesto de Haller, sino también como su parte femenina. En suma, una novela muy interesante con esencia budista y que bebe de ideas de grandes nombres como Nietzsche o Dostoievski. Un final onírico con la muerte representando el renacimiento y la idea de que la vida es un juego que hay que aprender a jugar.

Pero todo eso cambia cuando conoce a Armanda, la misteriosa cortesana que lo introduce en un mundo de placeres sensoriales. Con ella aprenderá a bailar, a disfrutar de ir a fiestas, e incluso volverá a enamorarse. Una vez más, Armanda es todo lo que no es Haller: placer, sensualidad y momento presente. Su personalidad andrógina (como sugiere su nombre) se revela no solo como el lado opuesto de Haller, sino también como su parte femenina. En suma, una novela muy interesante con esencia budista y que bebe de ideas de grandes nombres como Nietzsche o Dostoievski. Un final onírico con la muerte representando el renacimiento y la idea de que la vida es un juego que hay que aprender a jugar.
