Today's #grandma recording contained a lesson about #capitalism: Her mother Marie and her sister Pauline #Hercher (see photograph https://www.wikitree.com/photo/jpg/Hercher-14) sometimes collected European blueberries and sold them to a shop in the village. They received 1 Mark per pound, while the shop owner, an uncle of ski-jumper #GeorgThoma, sold them for 6 Mark.

Urgently trying to catch up with #grandma recordings for last week, I just heard of grandma being taken to about four flights around the #Alps, by her cousin Oskar #Hercher, who used to be a flight instructor in WW2. Once, they got into bad weather and almost hit the #EigerNordwand. Last minute, they found a hole to break through and ended up above the town #Chur, but again with the nicest weather. Let's see, what this week's record will bring!

Today's #grandma recording mainly revolved around her beloved uncle Wilhelm #Hercher https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hercher-27, who often let her help him as a child. He once "paid" a classmate of her chocolate for copying him two contemporary songs, which he then sang during work. Grandma also talked about his wife and how her and the isolated Black Forest farm weren't really a match. She also dropped some clues on relationships to other people from the village, which help me to jump source gaps.

Today's #grandma recording was partially difficult, because our topics were triggered by a back-then-present-day topic, which later turned out to be pretty traumatic for myself. But there also was a huge laugh: I mentioned a rather surprising name as witness of the wedding of her mother Marie #Hercher https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hercher-14 and asked, if that name "rings a bell" (in German it's only "does something ring there") and she said "no, on my side the connection is fine" 😂

In the belated #grandma recording for this week, she told me about the crash of a Canadian Halifax bomber not very far from their farm on 21 Feb 1944: All 7 crew members survived the crash. One of them was discovered by our relative Emil #Hercher https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hercher-33, who first took him to his parent's farm for food and then to town-hall. The local Nazi boss, said that this was unnecessary. He could have just shot him. Emil refused: He had been a pow in WW1 and also got home alive! #genealogy

Today's belated #grandma recordings had her talk about two relatives, that she had never met, but she kept hearing her family talk about them. I was able to track down both of them: Peter #Steurenthaler (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Steurenthaler-107 ), a cousin of her father, who was musician (like his son, who was killed in WW1) and Rebekka #Hercher, who emigrated to the US as a nun in the 19th century (no profile so far, maybe during #January2025ConnectAThon )

Today's #grandma recordings contained the story of the wedding of Maria #Hercher and Wilhelm #Ruth in 1934. During the party, around midnight, Wilhelm's father Wilhelm had a stroke and died. Father and son were blacksmiths, which probably explains the untypical iron grave marker of the son's family: https://www.wikitree.com/photo/jpg/Ruth-1651-1

Grandma's grandma used to complain, that his family had a family photograph taken and hers not. This was a good opportunity to transfer my notes about him to his profile ... and of course to upload the photograph.

Added information found in the denazification file of my relative Rudolf #Hercher to his #WikiTree profile. Turns out that he worked at the construction site of the #Schluchsee dam until he became a railway maintenance worker 1932.

Now the profile of Rudolf #Hercher also has the two postcards and their transcripts (except one word missing in one of them). I wonder why the one as French prisoner of war is written in Latin script and not in Sütterlin? Was that maybe a convention, so the French autorities were able to read the postcards before they were sent? Was that "a thing" back then?

I just wanted to add the military career to the profile of Rudolf #Hercher https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hercher-28 , which I had on my #July2023ConnectAThon backlog. Then I looked at the inventory of postcards in great-grandma's album and I discovered, that he wrote at least two to her - in completely different handwriting, one using Sütterlin script, the other using plain Latin script. I guess I'll have to stick a little longer to the profile and upload scans and transcripts. #genealogy #WikiTree

OK, one more: #grandma talked about her long way to school and her uncle Wilhelm. When there was a lot of snow, he would put on his snowshoes and grab a lantern and would walk in front of her for some time, so she would have a path instead of sinking in until the neck. She said that she still dreams about it and that, when waking up, she's happy for being in her warm bed. Maybe they're together again now, who knows.
