For a story about experiments, give your character a kit with instructions, ingredients, references.

    For Calmness (to "Chill Out"):

    Ingredients:
    cucumber water (1/2 oz)
chamomile, lavender, lemon balm, hawthorne (1 pinch each)
    orange oil (3 drops)

    Clear your mind.

While humming a quiet lullaby, grind dry herbs into powder. Add to the cucumber water. Stir, then add orange oil.

Drink (or serve) in a glass of OJ.

  5. Phytoestrogenic plants are a group that synthesizes chemicals mimicking the biological activity of mammalian estrogen. They may offer an accessible hormone replacement therapy substitute for menopause and (potentially) trans women.

I first found out about these over the weekend, when the guide on the forging tour I was on brought it up with respect to Crimson clovers. I went and checked the literature on that, which turns out to be rather robust.

  10. Outlining a new podcast episode on weeds and the Victorian language of flowers.

Can't place "Speedwell," so I go digging, and it's:
    - Veronica spp, a mat-forming weed I pull up
    - been used as a cure-all tea since the Romans
    - edible
    - everywhere because our Victorian forebears loved it in their gardens.

    🤯

What else don't I know about these mundane-yet-amazing plants?
Anybody got a favorite Speedwell fact or myth?

  15. Posts about medicinal herbs hardly ever include the side effects or any negative reactions. It's always, "drink chamomile tea to relax and sleep" and not, "15-20% of people are allergic to ragweeds, which includes chamomile, so it might give you a scratchy throat."

-Drinking mint tea regularly can cause acid reflux and exacerbate other GI issues.

-St. John's Wort calms you, and is good for depression, but it can also dangerously lower your heart rate if you take beta blockers.

-Sure, fennel is great for "digestive issues," but don't schedule a date that night, you will be very gassy.

-All members of the Poplar family, which includes Willow, contain the same chemical as modern aspirin within their bark. Don't give it to your kid if they have the flu or chicken pox, it can cause a deadly reaction.

-Rosehip helps with painful menstruation, and is a great source of vitamin C. So great, in fact, that you can overdose and give yourself kidney stones if you take too much.

-Dear white people, taking turmeric every day will literally turn you orange.

  26. I met the steward of a physic garden. We ended in Poisons. Woody Nightshade, crawling up trees; moody Hellebores, Spurge, Box. Her favourite, the Mandrake, had blight. She talked about nursing it & its folklore: a soul in a human-shaped root, screaming if pulled up. A strange moment, the cool walls bound in vines & locks. The sun eddied into shadow, & waves of people broke softly in the distance.

  31. The newborn lamb’s a gentle critter
Who frolics free, while I’m a bitter
    Reminder of your captive years.
I burn your eyes and bring forth tears
Symbolic of the ones you shed
    Before the Intercessor led
You out of Egypt. Slice or grate,
And serve me on the Seder plate.

One of my absolute favourite features of my work desk is this little ceramic pot filled with seashells (most that my brother and I collected when we were little in Central America/Caribbean) and river stones from Ireland and Iceland. Despite being filled with succulents of all sorts, it’s supposed to evoke a marine or river setting. Every time I see it it makes me happy.
