#Aotearoa / #NewZealand - #OurFoodNetwork AGM
Wednesday, 2 September 2026
5:30 pm 7:00 pmOtago Community House, Level 6 Rimu Room
43 Princes Street
Dunedin, Otago Region, 9016 New Zealand"Join us for a catch up and some nibbles, a talk from Skye Macfarlane with the opportunity to buy some Wild Dispensary Products, followed by the AGM. We are looking for more committee members to join this great group of people working on a really critical issue - making sure we can continue to feed ourselves
Skye Macfarlane is an #Ōtepoti - based natural health practitioner, #herbalist and Head Formulator at Wild Dispensary. She holds a Bachelor of Natural Medicine, alongside postgraduate qualifications in development studies and public health, and has more than a decade of experience in herbal medicine, product development and phytotherapy research.
At Wild Dispensary, Skye develops evidence-informed herbal products using locally grown and #NewZealandNativePlants, helping turn traditional herbal knowledge into practical products for modern life. She also co-operates a BioGro-certified organic market garden and medicinal herb farm in #Otago, works in food education and regional food resilience, and serves as Research Convenor on the Naturopaths & Medical Herbalists of New Zealand board. Her work brings together herbal medicine, local growing, sustainable business and a firm belief that good health begins with stronger connections to our food, plants and communities.
In this talk, Skye will share practical, evidence-informed winter wellness tips and introduce some of the herbs traditionally used during the colder months. She’ll also take us behind the scenes at Wild Dispensary, exploring how locally grown and native medicinal plants are transformed into contemporary herbal products, and the realities of building a values-led botanical business in Otago."

High in tannins: they bind iron and blunt oral medications, so leave two hours either side of anything you take on a schedule. Skip it in pregnancy or if you're anemic. And be certain of your identification — alder is not buckthorn, and buckthorn is a violent purgative. If you're eighty percent sure about the tree, buy the bark instead. #Herbalism #Herbalist #Alder #Feàrna #FolkMedicine #Foraging #Botany #Nature #Gardening #Druid #Folklore #Gàidhlig

Grey alder — Alnus incana, feàrna. For the throat that's been screaming.
Dried inner bark only, aged several months, never fresh — fresh bark will make you vomit, which is exactly why the old preparation insists on the drying. One teaspoon to a cup, simmered ten minutes, strained, cooled to warm. Gargle and spit. Good as an external wash on weepy skin and foot soaks.

Catnip and Ants
I started a lovely herb garden this year. I am quite proud of my little bed of goodies. I planted basil, catnip, mint, hyssop, motherwort, yarrow, sage, mallow, oregano, and a random melon/ cucumber plant that managed to fall into the mix. Nothing huge, just a little garden that brings a lot of joy. Last weekend I was tidying up around the plants and found myself being attacked by ants. I flicked and swiped them off then watched for a moment. My catnip plant was being swarmed by ants, […] -

#RockportME - Make Your Own #PersonalCareProducts Workshop
April 1 @ 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM
"Clinical #Herbalist #PatHarpell will lead a workshop at the #RockportPublicLibrary, teaching participants how to create their own personal care products. This free class, on Wednesday, April 1, at 1 p.m., is part of the Library’s 'Let’s Feel Better in 2026' series.
"Harpell emphasizes that personal care products are simple to make and free from the chemicals found in most store-bought products. During the workshop, participants will learn to make an all-natural lotion and facial cleanser using ingredients that are safe enough to consume. Attendees will take home their creations and receive instructions for making #LipBalm, #shampoo, hair rinse, and more.
"Harpell’s interest in skin care products originated from her research as a clinical herbalist. She encountered persistent, chronic conditions that resisted treatment from both modern and alternative medicine. This experience led her to advocate that the ingredients applied to the skin are just as important to consider as those put into the body. Harpell encourages participants to embrace this knowledge and host personal care product-making parties at home.
"The 90-min. program has a limited capacity of 16 participants. Interested individuals can register by calling the Rockport Library at 207-236-3642."

The Irreplaceable Gift of a True Friend
The most profound thing about having a true friend is the gift of a safe harbor for the nascent self. It's the secure space where the most tender and monumental aspects of your inner world can be expressed without fear of judgment, skepticism, or premature dismissal. Think of those things that are currently bursting inside of you—the exhilarating, often terrifying, stirrings of a future yet to be built. These are the new possibilities, new ideas, and new dreams that are too fragile, too […]https://hcongrove2.com/2025/11/24/the-irreplaceable-gift-of-a-true-friend/

You Are A Lier!! 😡
I can make up stories.I can make up lies. I can scream them from the tallest tree in the sky. I want attention, wont you look at me,Way way way up here in the tree. I yell and yak, I make a lot of noise. I lack common decency and was not taught poise. My neighbors hate me, they say my voice annoys. But what is life, if not filled with joys. I hide in disguise, you'll never see my face. You will never know my exact place. Amongst the trees, way up high in the sky,I make up lies and tell all […]https://hcongrove2.com/2025/11/22/you-are-a-lier-%f0%9f%98%a1/

Black and White
The imagination of a child is like no other. Tiny minds filtering the words information and just trying to make since of it. They grow and shape each and everyday, with a number of factors contributing. It's facilitating as a parent to witness your children navigate the struggles and obstacles of life, ultimately learning how to be self sufficient. A view that is often bitter sweet. As a parent there are many times that we see the exact moment of realization often followed by a long […] -
The Planet’s Most Underappreciated Substance: A Detailed Look at Mud
Dirt, Water and Life Mud- the rudimentary inventiom of adding water to dirt to create a sticky, dynamic medium. A substance not only for building childhood memories but a cornerstone of civilization that has shaped landscapes, provided shelter and continues to be an unsung hero of the global carbon cycle. The Geological and Chemical Anatomy of Mud Dirt + Water = Mud, simple right? Not exactly. Geologically, mud is defined as a mixture of silt, clay, and/or loam combined with water. […] -
#PTSD #Trauma #herbalmedicine #solidarity #elearning #NoBorders #activism
A trusted friend and comrade from the UK asked me to spread the word about her course solidarityapothecary.org/herba…
She is a certified #herbalist, working for years to help migrants, prisoners and activists with remedies they need. If you heard about #SolidarityApothecary in Calais, it's her. Now, she just became a single mother and, apart from meagre social money, her courses are the source both of her sustenance and funding for her activism.
I recommend her in full and I believe that every community needs at least one person trained in herbalism, starting from the area of (c)PTSD and trauma recovery.
So, go enroll! The price is on the sliding scale, so nobody will be barred from the knowledge due to the lack of money.

Lore Collage: Everyone has dragons, they’re all different
I have to blog. It’s a curse
It’s also a space full of unpublished drafts. I wouldn’t want to see what drafts I lost when Sounder at Heart left SB Nation. I can still check what SaH has of mine in drafts, but I don’t dare check that. I recently checked my work drafts and even there I have unpublished drafts. Here there are unpublished drafts.
Anyway, I have to blog.
But also I let things get in the way of publishing. Which is frustrating.
It does mean that I don’t need to shave the yak like my friend, but sometimes, maybe I need a bit of a reset. That’s a part of what Lore Collage is. It compels me to write more. Even if I don’t think my words are worthy — I press publish.

Dragons are funny things. Almost every culture has dragon-ish monsters in their stories. In my own world they horde things and emotions and knowledge. In others they are a warring faction of old gods. What are your dragons?
Over on EN World SlyFlourish asked people to share their game prep. Since I’m not DMing right now I didn’t share, but seeing the variety of ways people prep for games is wonderful.
While most of my role-play is centered around 5e and similar systems, I like the Ennies as a way to keep me aware of new systems, creators and aids. The 2025 nominee list includes two products I’ve already used (DungeonScrawl and Hero Forge Kitbashing).

If you live in the Puget Sound and Columbia Basins you don’t need to worry about the tiny earthquake swarms under Tahoma. If you are creating a fantasy world, add earthquake swarms as a natural hazard, make them big. See how the characters react to things they cannot fight. Then make them fight an earthquake swarms.
Making Enemies is the next book from The Monsters Know What They’re Doing creator Keith Amman. The way Keith approaches lore based in the short story of a stat block makes me excited to see what he does when he’s teaching me how to make the stat blocks.
Creating an RPG is hard. It takes either an immense amount of talent or a network of people. It probably takes both. PJ Coffey gets into the details of all the tasks that go into publishing a work. I’ve worked with PJ on two of their projects.
A few weeks ago I spoke at a risk intelligence conference about using role playing games as a teaching aid for non practitioners. My search algorithm is working. Both Rascal News and Military.com put out stories that will be part of my next work presentation on the same subject.

Kobold Press has a deal on shipping right now. I’m looking at the Labyrinth Worldbook. It is full of ideas I can borrow into the World of the Everflow. Which would be funny since as a backer for Tales of the Valiant I pitched the World of the Everflow to be included.
Handily, SlyFlourish has a review up.
