I keep reading about Corsi–Rosenthal boxes as DIY air purifiers that outperform all commercially available air purifiers.

You literally only duct-tape four HVAC filters together and slap any regular PC fan onto them.

US-Americans recommend the brand #Filtrete for MERV-rated HVAC filters, but in Europe that brand costs at least twice or thrice as much as in the USA.

Are there any equivalent affordable HVAC filters in Europe with a MERV rating of 8 or 13? Or do I simply have to swallow the additional cost because HVAC filters aren't as ubiquitous in Europe as they are in North America?

Hazardous Air Quality - “Everyone should stay indoors and reduce activity levels.”

The DC region has blown past the expected Code Red Air Quality warning for Friday, July 18. It was only red for about an hour before moving to the purple “Very Unhealthy” for everyone range. Now, it’s mostly in the maroon “Hazardous” for everyone range, which is the highest this scale goes up to. This is due to wildfire smoke from Canada. Good thing rain is in the forecast for tomorrow.

If you have an N95 mask, such as the 3M Aura (which fits about 80% of adults), it is a very good idea to wear it. Under these conditions, a half piece respirator is better if you have one and need to go outdoors. Most hardware stores should have them in stock if you don’t have one on hand.

Remember that smoke rises, so stay on the lowest floor while indoors if you can. The PM levels for my upstairs rooms are much higher than my lower ones. You can seal leaky windows with painters tape and plastic sheeting to create a “safe room” with HEPA air purifiers or make a CR Box (I reposted a tutorial yesterday).

Has anyone tried making a PAPR or HEPA stroller? A few people have mentioned the concept but the only source I've found is this one paper: https://www.researchsquare.com/article/rs-2430680/v1

I'd love practical tips. Right now I can't go into stores with my baby because she can't mask, having the ability to wheel her inside would greatly expand what I can do while caring for my child. Also useful during wildfire smoke.

Outdoor air quality here is still terrible, so I trimmed some berry-laden branches from my sea buckthorn bushes (masked of course) and brought the branches inside to actually pick the berries. Bonus: I could sit down while harvesting indoors, surrounded by air purifiers! I facilitated an online workshop for @freetechproject tonight and it's the first time we tackled technology to fight #Covid (Co2 monitors, air purifiers, #HEPA, #CorsiRosenthal boxes, #NukitTempest, etc) as well as why this is important (what Covid is, how it spreads, etc) and the small (predominantly older) group was very open to the ideas, sincerely inquisitive about the topic, interested in reducing risk, aware of inclusion issues, and sensitive to my own experiences as carer for a partner disabled by Covid. I'm also realising that people genuinely refer to "Covid" in the past tense sometimes because they wrongly associate it with government policy, while at the same time they very clearly understand that #CovidIsNotOver. My point is, keep tackling the topic, and keep giving folks the benefit of the doubt -- humans are of course good at heart and state policies, and obviously the establishment media, may very well indeed not, in fact, reflect people's actual concerns about Covid.

My indoor #PM25 reading is FINALLY as low as is measurable by the #AirPurifier!

Step one is to get a quality #respirator #mask -- #N95, #N99. #P100, #KN95, #KF94, #FFP2, #FFP3, #P3 -- I prefer #elastomeric P100.

Step two is to wear it ( #WearAMask ) when around other people, because anyone could be infected.

Hoping to get some input from #HVAC #Engineers and other experts: in a school built in the 70s that originally had no walls and is now divided up into classrooms via a mixture of full height, 3/4 height, and half height walls and dividers...would getting walls & doors be helpful or harmful from a #CleanAir standpoint? HVAC has #MERV13 filters, & the building has a handful of #HEPA air purifiers, but very few windows.

So the crucial number for an air purifier is the "clean air delivery rate" or #CADR. In the US, this is measured in "cubic feet per minute" (#CFM) of *filtered air*.

With #HEPA, which filters out 99.97% of particles, the CFM of the HEPA purifier is basically the same as the CFM of the fan.

With a CR box built with MERV-13 filters, which is only guaranteed to remove 50% of particles, the CFM of the CR box is *half* the CFM of the fan itself (it's filtering half the air....) 1/n
