Happy 77th birthday to the one-and-only Fred Frith, born #OTD in 1949. Unique in the field, he has experimental music he has produced a staggering body of work, both solo and in collaboration with so many others, across almost 60 years.
It was a real highlight to see him live in Glasgow last May: the sense of space, the sense of play, the sense of reaching beyond.

I find myself turning more and more to the music and ideas of Henry Cow these days, not to mention those of the myriad spheres and satellites orbiting their sun-gone-supernova. Hard to believe their remarkable first LP was released 50 years ago this month.

In the fifty years or so since the #MothersofInvention and #HenryCow introduced the world to a whole new musical paradigm called avant-prog, the nebulous style has shapeshifted between the world of chamber music, classical string ensembles and the world of freeform #ExperimentalRock but very few have muddled the distinctions as successfully as ASCETA seems to have on this debut self-titled release.
