  1. "A Winter Scene," Hendrik Meyer, 1787.

Meyer (1744-93) is also sometimes called Hendrik de Meijer.

Details of his life are sketchy; he was born in Amsterdam, operated a wallpaper factory from 1764-9, and then became director of the Stadstekenacademie, an art school, in Haarlem in 1769 until his death.

Meyer is best known for his meticulous draftsmanship and arranging of his paintings, which often have a theatrical quality. He also deliberately echoed the stylings and material of the earlier Dutch Golden Age, especially Brueghel's depictions of everyday peasant life.

Here we've got a snow-covered village and a frozen river, but everyone is busy. Some are gathering wood, others are skating, sledding, and sleighing. The cottage is covered with snow but smoke is coming from the chimney and the people at the door don't seem poor or cold.

Meyer's work isn't viewed as great or classic, but certainly pleasant and with a certain charm. He seems to have had commerce in mind, making what would sell.
