  6. Over two billion tonnes of iron ore have been mined from the Labrador Trough of Quebec and Labrador over the last 70 years. The paleo-Proterozoic sediments have been variably metamorphosed (you can see the bend in the southern part of the belt caused by the younger Grenville orogeny). Much of the direct shipping ore is dominated by the mineral .

The steel of your lunchtime knife and fork may have come from the Trough!

  11. Go Hematite!

It’s my son’s favourite mineral. It also gets a geobiological vote, as banded iron formations may have been produced by metabolising microbes over many millions of years, beginning billions of years ago.

Very well done! BIFs make their appearance around minute five.

  14. Haüyne, formed in magma chambers, is pretty, blue & can fluoresce. But electrically conductive iron-ore hematite is an absolute giant of art history, used as red ochre, going back at least 164,000 years to Pinnacle Point Caves! Also called Venetian, mars or English red.

    Vote hematite! #MinCup25

  16. The haüyne has my vote in this round. I have a weakness for blue, though the allure of #MartianBlueberries hematite is strong...

The pictures seemed to be missing from the original post, so I attached pics of #hauyne and #hematite to this post.

  17. Sanidine vs Hematite (planetary science edition)

While plagioclase is the dominant feldspar on Mars, high concentrations of sanidine were measured in the Windjana drill sample by Curiosity in Gale crater but it is present in other drill samples.

Hematite is a common mineral on Mars but is particularly abundant in a feature called Vera Rubin ridge at Gale crater. The presence of gray hematite in one sample suggeste hydrothermal precipitation.

  18. #Hematite! A few polished “Tiger Iron” or banded iron specimens I have were not photographed yet, so I’ve gone to searching Flickr and found this beautiful piece also featured in a 2012 article on research with early RNA on hematite/iron being a catalyst for organic developmental enzymes! So I’d suggest and favor a vote for Hematite in #MinCup25 today. Article here: arstechnica.com/science/2012/0

  19. @ombialik Agreed! I have at least 4 forms of Hemitite in my collection. I find it fascinating. Between #Hematite and #Sanidine there is no contest for me so I already voted. Thankfully over 250 folks agree with me on the vote. Anyone can vote in any daily contest. See posts with more information about the minerals by clicking their hashtags. 20. My favorite rock is #BandedIronFormation, a sedimentary rock comprised of thin bands of #Magnetite and #Hematite interlaced with (usually) reddish #jasper (chert #quartz). It's beautiful, primarily down to #TeamQuartz. Sadly, neither hematite or magnetite are in #MinCup23 Vote for quartz here: mineralcup.org/2023/campaigns/

  21. @MineralCup I feel personally assaulted that #tourmaline, #beryl, #barite, and even #spodumene and #selenite the largest crystals in the world, aren't in this bracket. These are badass minerals.
    I don't think #mercury is even a #mineral. It's just an #element.
And no #hematite or #magnetite? People are just showing off. #bischofite? Girl, please. #shitpostingwithlove

  26. I voted for #sanidine, because it made me so happy when I learned to recognize it in the Bishop Tuff. Nothing against #hematite, though. It can be used to date fault movement!
